Way to Veterans Dnve, hononng all military
veterans.
RECITALS
A. Marcus Shelton, a Kent resident, requested that Mayor Suzette
Cooke cons1der renammg South 231 st Way to Veterans Dnve to honor
veterans for their dedication and service to our country, especially his
father, the late Thomas E. Shelton, who retired after 26 years m the
Un1ted States Air Force.
B. Mayor Cooke believes renaming the street would be a fitting tribute
to honor all branches of serv1ce.
C. The Mayor has requested that South 231 st Way be renamed
Veterans Drive from the p01nt where 1t mtersects Russell Road and
cont1nues west over the Colonel Joe M. Jackson bridge, end1ng at M1l1tary
Road.
D. H1stoncally, Mil1tary Road opened up supply lmes between m1l1tary
forts when it was f1rst completed m 1860, makmg it one of the oldest
roads in Washington. Now the City will have an appropnately-named
connect1on between Mll1tary Road and the Colonel Joe M. Jackson bndge.

NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENT,
WASHINGTON, DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
RESOLUTION
SECTION 1. -Renaming. South 2315t Way m Kent, beginning at
Russell Road and endmg at 1ts intersection w1th Military Road, shall be
renamed "Veterans Drive." The City's Public Works Department is
authonzed to descnbe the exact limits of Veterans Drive by m1lepost, street
sect1on, or other appropnate legal description to the extent requ1red for
publ1c safety or other purposes.
SECTION 2. -Severabilitv. If any sect1on, subsect1on, paragraph,
sentence, clause or phrase of th1s resolution is declared unconstitutional or
invalid for any reason, such decision shall not affect the val1d1ty of the
remainmg port1ons of th1s resolution.
SECTION 3. -Corrections by City Clerk or Code Reviser. Upon
approval of the City Attorney, the City Clerk and the code rev1ser are
authonzed to make necessary corrections to this resolution, includ1ng the
correction of clencal errors; references to other local, state or federal laws,
codes, rules, or regulations; or resolution numbering and
sect1onjsubsect1on numbenng.
SECTION 4. -Effective Date. Th1s resolution shall take effect and
be m force May 31, 2013.
