HomeMy WebLinkAbout5331 2 3 4 '' 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 Resolution No. ------- ':IHF.REAS in the Pnctric North"rest it has been a long accepted practice for many municipalities to protect and restrict access to surface watersheds which are the source of their potable fresh water supply in order to produce water of high auality in order to safenuard the public henlth of the customers,and \·m~EAS the protection and preservation of these watershed areas has permitted the production of high quality water at low cost 'vhich has contributed materially to the economic growth and vtell-being of this area, and \~'HF:ilEAS the municipal watersheds in the State of ''lashington supply the potable water for npproximately one-half of the population of the State while occupying less thPn one percent of the State land area without detracting from the exceptional recreation opportunities already available which include many lakes, rivers and creeks, in addition to the Puget Sound and Pacific OcP.nn coastal areas, and 1 •11-!F.RT<~AS the State of 1-Jashin.n;ton already has aT'nroximately one-third of its area set aside in public land 1-fhich is available for recreation, and which includes gmple present and future camping, picnicking and hunting lands, and 1\TH~REAS water pollution has becor.~e a matter of tremendous magnitude and pressing concern on a national scale and is becoming more acute to the nrejudice of the public health and v-Tell-being of the citizens of this Country, and HHRRF.:AS municipalities of the .State of Washington are expenrl-, ing funds to protect their consumers and to preserve and maintain the purity of their municipal water supply sources through the control of access into their watershed areas, and 1tlHEREAS certain agencies of the Federal Government are attempt- ing to interfere in matters of local determination by opening watersheds for unrestricted nccess and recreational purnoses contrary to the rec- onunendations of the majority of local interest and Public Health Author- ities , and BE IT, THRrrEFORF., l1.ESQLVED that the 'Mayor of1 th,e City ,. ''df~ Kent!:' 'a'rid' the Kent "City· Council ar_e unanimously opposed to the efforts of Federal Government agencies in attempting to open municipal watersheds for unrestricted access and recrentiop~l develonment with- out regard to the economic requirements of the n!}~a and contrary to the reconunendations of local interests and Public'•,Mealth Auth9:rities, and BE IT FU~THER R~SOLVF.D that a copy of this resolution be sent to the President of the United States, Secretarv of Agriculture, Sec- retary of Army and all of the members of the, 1-la~shington and Oregon Congressional Delegation, the Governor and State Legislators of the State of '!tfashington urging that every effort be made to protect and preserve the purity of our most basic of all natural resources -\-TATER!
