WHEREAS, the City of Kent has operated successfully under a Council/Mayor form of government with a part-time Mayor for 99 years; and WHEREAS, Kent's present form of government provides a great degree of accountability and responsiveness through its Mayor, the elected chief executive and administrative officers; and WHEREAS, Kent's present form of government also provides a high degree of professionalism with its professional City Administrator and Department Managers who provide assistance and advice to the Mayor; and WHEREAS, Kent's present Mayor is doing a good job; and WHEREAS, relations between the City Council and the Mayor are amicable, cooperative, and team oriented; and WHEREAS, Kent's "government team" has made great accomplishments in achieving important community goals including, but not limited to, projects presently underway to construct a new library, a new public-private office building, three new fire stations and S.E. 277th corridor; and WHEREAS, a ballot issue to change the City's present form of government, if Buccessful, would be extremely disruptive to the City by diverting Councilmembers' attention away from City business to political matters because state law requires that all sitting Councilmembers stand for election at the next general municipal election in order to retain their positions; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENT, WASHINGTON DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The Council reaffirms its support for the City's present form of government which provides accountability, professionalism and has functioned successfully since its formation. Section 2. The Council urges proponents of a change in Kent's form of government to cease their efforts because these efforts, if successful, would be disruptive to the smooth operation of government and would not be in the public interest.
