A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF KENT DECLARING ITS
RECOGNITION OF AND SUPPORT OF THE CONCEPT AND PROCESS
OF CITY DESIGN.
WHEREAS, the land use and sub-area plans of the City of Kent con-
tain a number of goals and policies which relate indirectly to city design;
and
WHEREAS, there is a growing awareness of and appreciation for city
design in the Kent community which is reflected, in part, by several recent
private and public developments; and
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to expand this awareness and
appreciation, and to add to the inventory of well-designed public and private
places; and
WHEREAS, the Planning Department with the aid of a Design Task Force
did conduct a study of the design problems and potentials in Kent's commercial
and residential areas, and did present the results of said study at the City
Council workshop on October 10, 1983; and
WHEREAS, the aforementioned report titled Kent Design Report does
address ways to implement city design for Kent which will lead to a more liveable
community; and
WHEREAS, it is altogether appropriate that the City Council receive,
review and support the design study during the observance of Kent's second annual
Design Awareness Month (October 1983); NOW THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENT, WASHINGTON, DOES HEREBY RESOLVE
AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The City Council supports the concept and process of
city design in Kent.
Section 2. The considerations of city design are important and
endemic to the establishment of a desirable quality and unique city character.
The design of all constituent parts of the City is important to the overall
aesthetic and functional condition of the Kent community. Livability and amenity
are no longer viewed as frills but measures of our design success. Further,
design should be considered at all levels of the decision-making process, by
private and individuals as well as by public officials.
Section 3. As a partner withtheprivate sector in the city design
process, the City acknowledges the importance of design considerations in the
construction of such public facilities as governmental buildings, parks, streets,
sidewalks, and drainageways.
