A RESOLUTION of the City Council
of the City of Kent, Washington, regarding the
endorsement of a sales tax increase for public
transportation.
WHEREAS, pursuant to the laws of the State of Washington
and by approval of the qualified electorate of the Municipality on
September 19, 1972, the Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle (Metro)
is levying a retail sales and use tax of .3% for the operation, main-
tenance and capital needs of the metropolitan public transportation
system; and
WHEREAS, the laws of the State of Washington have been
amended by Chapter 163, Laws of 1980, 1st Executive Session, to per-
mit the Municipality to submit to the voters an authorizing propo-
sition to increase the rate of the retail sales and use tax to a
maximum of six-tenths of one percent; and
WHEREAS, rapidly growing demand for public transporta-
tion services within King County requires increased financial support
for the purpose of providing expanded public transportation service
and facilities; and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the residents
of the City of Kent to support adequate financing of expanded pub-
lic transportation service and facilities through the levying of an
additional retail sales and use tax;
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Kent,
Washington, do hereby resolve:
The Council of the City of Kent, Washington, endorses
the proposition on the November 4, 1980 ballot to levy an additional
retail sales and use tax not to exceed three-tenths of one percent
for the purpose of providing public transportation service and facil-
ities.
