A RESOLUTION of the City Council of the
City of Kent, Washington, relating to the
possession and use of firearms.
WHEREAS, the King County Organizing Project is a non-
profit organization of churches and institutions whose goal is to
focus on issues of community concern and implement social and
political change through community involvement; and
WHEREAS, during the months of November and December,
1993, one hundred leaders in government, industry and education
were contacted in order to seek input on items of interest and
concern to communities; and
WHEREAS, the survey resulted in a campaign, to assist
in the curbing of youth violence by raising the legal age for
possession and use of firearms; and
WHEREAS, King County Organizing Project leaders have
contacted senators and state representatives from 24 districts
which are covered by the member organizations to seek their
support for legislation to raise the legal age to possess and
operate a firearm in public from 14 to 21 years; and
WHEREAS, the King County Organizing Project is holding
a rally on the steps of the Capitol building on February 14,
1994, at 12 o'clock noon, to which the senators and
representatives from the 24 districts mentioned above are
invited; and
WHEREAS, the King County Organizing Project has asked
the Kent city Council to support its campaign; NOW, THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENT, WASHINGTON DOES
HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the City Council hereby endorses the
efforts of the King County Organizing Project for legislation
prohibiting anyone under the age of 21 years from handling or
having in his or her possession or control any firearm, except
while accompanied by or under the control of his or her parent,
guardian or other person 21 years of age or older.
