Arts Commission Minutes
Commissioners: Chair Countess Stekovic, Vice Chair Ryan Olmsted, Treasurer Gerard Philpotts,
Christy Caravaglio, Kerry French, Renee Hazen, Julianna Hind, Campbell Kristenson, Colleen Maloney,

1. Call to order - The meeting was called to order at 5:32 p.m.
2. Roll Call - Excused: Hazen, Ohno, Philpotts
3. Changes to the Agenda
8.C. Give Me Culture Application - Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra
8. D. Elect new Treasurer
4. April Minutes - Westman made a motion to approve the minutes as written.
Olmsted seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
5. Treasurer's Report - March month end reports were distributed for review.
6. Performing Arts Committee
A. 2024-2025 Spotlight Series booking update - None
B. 2024 Summer Concerts update - None at this time; proofs for promotional
materials are starting to come in. Discussion regarding location of stage for
Thursdays at the Lake.
7. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee
A. Updates
-Garrison Creek - No update; project still paused
-East Hill North - Caravaglio made a motion to approve the panel's
recommendation to contract with artist Vaughn Bell to serve on the design team
and create artwork for this new community park. Spreitzer seconded and the
motion unanimously carried.

written public comments may only be submitted in person by presenting them to the commission
secretary at the public meeting. Written public comments that do not relate to a committee agenda

Unless otherwise noted, the Arts Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. the 2nd Wednesday of each
month at the Centennial Building, 1st floor conference rooms, 400 W. Gowe St., Kent, WA 98032.

-Traffic Signal Control Box Art Wraps - 95 applications, 87 eligible, which is the
most in the program's history. Selection panel will review and score applications
by May 20.
B. Gallery - Current show: Kay Bae & Clare Johnson: April 2 - May 23
C. 2024 Summer Art Exhibit - 66 pieces by 39 artists will be included
-Opening Reception: 6/5/24, 6 to 7:30 p.m., show runs through 8/22
8. General updates/other business
A. Arts Commission planning/retreat - Staff, Chair, and Vice Chair met with
consultant Randy Brinson to begin planning for a fall session.
B. Kent Arts Commission booth at Cornucopia Days - Olmsted led a discussion
about participation in this event.
C. Give Me Culture application from Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Caravaglio made a motion to approve full funding in the amount of $1,000 for
MVYSO's summer camp program. Olmsted seconded and the motion carried
unanimously.
D. Hind made a motion to elect Gerard Philpotts as Kent Arts Commission
Treasurer for the remainder of the 2024 calendar year. Caravaglio seconded and
the motion carried unanimously.
E. Give Me Culture application from Kent Community Foundation. An application
was submitted on 5/8, but not received by staff. The request was for $75 to fund
supplies for the organization's art activity to serve approximately 200 people at
Kent International Festival on June 1. Staff will work with website staff to locate the
application. French made a motion to approve funding in the amount of $75
pending receipt/location of the application. Caravaglio seconded and the motion
carried unanimously.
9. Next Meeting
Summer Art Exhibit Opening Reception in lieu of June Meeting
Nex meeting: July 10, 5:30 p.m.
10. Adjourn - The meeting was adjourned at 6:31 p.m.
