IIIZKE 4 NT hS'hiwi h6TOa Arts Commission Minutes Commissioners: Chair Countess Stekovic, Vice Chair Ryan Olmsted, Treasurer Gerard Philpotts, Christy Caravaglio, Kerry French, Renee Hazen, Julianna Hind, Campbell Kristenson, Colleen Maloney, John Mclaughlin, Bryan Ohno, Kelly Spreitzer, Jen Treese, Sandi Westman (Alternate: Vacant) (Brenda Fincher, City Council Liaison) July 10, 2024 5:30 p.m. Centennial Building, 1st floor conference rooms, 400 W. Gowe Street Item Description 1. Call to order - The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. 2. Roll Call - Excused: French, Spreitzer 3. Changes to the Agenda - Addition of item 8.C. Give Me Culture grant application 4. May Minutes - Olmsted made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Westman seconded and the motion carried unanimously. 5. Treasurer's Report - May month end reports were distributed for review. 6. Performing Arts Committee A. 2024-2025 Spotlight Series - Caravaglio made a motion to approve the 24-25 Spotlight Series schedule. Kristenson seconded and the motion carried unanimously. B. 2024 Summer Concerts update - The series kicked off today (7/10) with a "Wednesday Picnic Performance" for kids at West Fenwick Park. Approximately 400 people enjoyed the juggling and physical comedy of Roberto the Magnificent. 7. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee A. Updates -Garrison Creek - None -East Hill North - Contract with artist Vaughn Bell has been signed and she has been meeting with the design consultants. The public may submit written public comments that relate to an agenda item by emailing: cityclerk@kentwa.gov by 3:30 p.m. on the day of this commission meeting. After 3:30 p.m., written public comments may only be submitted in person by presenting them to the commission secretary at the public meeting. Written public comments that do not relate to a committee agenda item are not permitted. Written public comments are not read into the record. Unless otherwise noted, the Arts Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Centennial Building, 1st floor conference rooms, 400 W. Gowe St., Kent, WA 98032. Traffic Signal Control Box Art Wraps - Olmsted made a motion to approve the proposals from Vincent Keele, Cathryn Baerwald, Maggie Jiang, Troy Miles, Nalisha Estrellas, and Shima Star. Maloney seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Staff will communicate the Commission's thoughts and input to the artists as they prepare their artworks for final submission. Proposals from the remaining artists: Kay Burnett, Rodney King, Gabrielle Abbott will be presented in August. C. Gallery -2024 Summer Art Exhibit through August 23 D. 2024 Purchase Awards - Westman made a motion to approve the 2024 Purchase Jury's recommendations and to accession the 14 new artworks into the City's portable collection. Caravaglio seconded and the motion carried unanimously. E. RapidRide - King County Metro public art - Staff presented artist RYAN! Feddersen's proposed artwork for the RapidRide extension in Renton, Kent, and Auburn, including design for a retaining wall at Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks Park. Staff will communicate the Commission's feedback to 4Culture. 8. General updates/other business A. Arts Commission planning/retreat - Commissioners prefer one long day (approx. 6 hours) on a Saturday this fall. Staff will send a Doodle poll with potential dates. B. Kent Arts Commission booth at Cornucopia Days - Vice Chair Olmsted, Colleen Maloney and Julianna Hind will staff a booth this coming Saturday, July 13. Staff provided flyers and other materials. C. Give Me Culture grant application from Barbara McMichael - Caravaglio moved to fully fund the project, Tempests in Teapots, at $500. Maloney seconded and the motion carried with two abstentions. 9. Next Meeting August 14, 5:30 p.m. 10.
