Improve the quality of life and enhance the aesthetic environment. Promote Kent as a center for great arts. Dan Cox seconded and the motion carried unanimously. II TREASURER: April month end reports were shared. No Staff explained that Commissioners do not have direct fiduciary responsibility. Performing Arts/Committee Programs Topic Action Item 1. 2014-2015 Spotlight Series final season summary No -9 performances by 9 artists (same as the 2013-2014 season) -Very slight increase from 1,834 to 1,863 -Total expenses: $85,309 in 2013-2014, and $84,727 in 2014-2015 -Decrease in revenue is accounted for by the one-time $8,500 Kent Parks Foundation donation to fund Alpin Hong in spring of 2014 2. 2015-2016 Booking No -Friday, October 2: The Kingston Trio -Friday, October 16: Kenny Endo Contemporary Ensemble -Thursday, December 3: The Second City -Sunday, December 6: Magical Strings Celtic Yuletide Concert -Friday, January 29: International Guitar Night -Friday, February 5: Antics -Friday, February 26: A Fiddler's Feast -Friday, April 1: Sister's Easter Catechism Dan Cox made a motion to approve the season schedule, with the possible addition of one show in March of 2016. (Possibilities are Jon Anderson or Al Stewart). Bayard DuBois seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Next Meeting: No July meeting. Possible meeting on August 11, 5:30 p.m. TBD. B. Lynn Bohart seconded and the motion carried unanimously. -Purchase jury 2016 Gallery season exhibit invitations Yes Proposed shows include: • Naoko Morisawa / Peter Boome • Mary Ann Cagley / Kari Westphal • Mike Ferguson / Ron Simmons • Ann Chadwick Reid / Jerry Gordon • Larry Larsen / Betty Jo Costanzo Sharona Chandra made a motion to approve the 2015 Summer Art Exhibit Purchase Jury's recommendations for shows in the 2016 season. Linda Mackintosh seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Staff will invite and schedule the artists. 2. 2015-2019 City Art Plan No -Meeker Street Underpass project Economic Development reports that $9,000 was raised toward the project at the Kent Downtown Project auction through their "fund an item" program. The Arts Commission still has $10,000-20,000 set aside. Commissioners discussed the project and concluded that they do not want to designate any additional funding at this time. The Commissioners would like to see a comprehensive project for clean-up and landscaping and then come on board with a significant art budget. -Green River Stop Log project No update. Waiting for specs from Public Works. (Note: Since the 6/9 meeting, staff received word that Public Works has canceled this project.) 3. On-going maintenance Updates No -Joel Lee of Art Wrangler has been out in the field repairing and repainting Michael Whiting's sculptures at Arbor Heights 360 Skate Park. -Staff will contract with Charles Bigger to remove, refurbish, and reinstall his sculptures at Canterbury Neighborhood Park this summer. VII GENERAL UNFINISHED BUSINESS: • 2015 - 401" Anniversary Update No Staff shared timeline of select "significant achievements" • Youth commissioner vacancy No Three applications have been received. Staff is waiting to hear from the mayor about interview times. • One Commissioner vacancy No VIII NEW BUSINESS: • 41" of July Splash - possible volunteers to run a hands-on art project for kids? Not enough availability to run the project this year. • Poet Laureate - staff was contacted by another citizen interested in a poet laureate program. Staff requested additional information and asked that the citizen re-approach us in the fall. IX CORRESPONDENCE: X NEXT COMMISSION MEETING: No July meeting.
