Reports
Lodging Tax Budget
December Report along with 2013-2014 budgets, a history of the lodging tax
collections over 5 years along with a chart of those collections were handed out by
Bob Nachlinger. This budget was approved by Council. Chair asked for questions?
Perry asked; have we heard about the Tukwila budget being amended, Perry assumes
it has been taken care of in reference to the Seattle Southside Contract being
amended to $60,000 a year from $120,000. Perry had a conversation with Mayor
Haggerton of Tukwila he understands that all cities are in tough budget times and
understand the decision Kent made on what Kent feels is a reasonable amount for the
Seattle Southside contract.
Ben Wolters added that he and Katherine has not yet met but it is scheduled for
March 7, 2013. We have the existing agreement and we have what we have agreed
too, which is we cut Seattle Southside amount in half ($60,000) and we have agreed
to continue to pay the full payment of $10,000 a month but end at $60,000, which
gives us some time to negotiate the reduced level of service. What does $60,000 buy
us? At a minimum we will per the terms of the existing contract serve notice of
termination, 60 days prior. Wolters also had a conversation with Derek Speck, ECD
Director at Tukwila during their conversation Speck said the same thing Mayor
Hagerton said to Chair Perry in reference to all City budgets are tight and he
understands Kent decision to lower the contract rate.
Lodging Tax Asks
Tim Higgins ShoWare GM stated at the last meeting ShoWare presented to the
Lodging Tax Advisory Committee a way to help Brand Kent with a 60 second
commercial during the Love on Ice Show held at ShoWare. At that time the request
that was brought to the board was $35,000 we got an ok to move forward but we are
here to present the video to the committee and get the final approve for the $35,000.
This commercial was on live time NBC during the Love on Ice Show and seen by 2.5
million viewers on Sunday, January 25, 2013.
Wolters added this is now ours to reuse in a variety of different forms for some time
to help Brand the City and market Kent as a great place to come.
David Kwok had an idea that maybe we could negotiate to advertise Kent on
Northwest Cable News. They are a regional new channel.

Chair Perry called for a vote; Barbara Smith moves to approve the $35,000 for the
ShoWare Kent Commercial, David Seconds, motion passes.
David Kwok asked where's the money coming from. Perry replied, it is coming from
the budget we set aside for ShoWare in the amount of $60,000 in the 2013-2014
budgets.
Good of the order
Presented was the new Ask Form; to request moneys from Lodging Tax Advisory
Committee for tourism related events. Perry is changing the date from March 1 to
May 1 for the first deadline. She asked for amendments or feed back to this form
from the Committee in the next couple days. After that we will be sending it out to
everyone who has asked for money before. If emergency asks come in we will deal
with them when they come Perry added. Barbara Smith asked for an electronic
version of the form to be sent to her.
Barbara Smith brought up Gig Harbor has just gone through a branding exercise.
She said the company was from back East and the cost was $15,000. She will send
out the name of the company. She felt it was worth exploring. It was very well
done. Perry added that SCA just spent $35,000 for their new branding.
Beth Sylves presented an article from Alaska Airlines January issue about the
greening of sports where ShoWare is talked about and there is a very nice picture.
Beth showed a newsletter from Sports events which comes out monthly and
Snohomish County has an ad including ShoWare. They use a point person to collect
all the areas sports events. It could be something we advertise into.
Tim Higgins showed a photo of Mayor Cooke who made it into a trade magazine with
Barry Manilow.
Chair Perry asked any more questions, concerns anything for the good of the order?
David Kwok asked about the 3 on 3. Tim spoke on behalf of Steve Turcotte; he will be
looking for advertising for Seattle U basketball game March 6th. He is looking for
$1,500 for Radio spots. Steve asked if Tim would come to the Lodging Tax
Committee and ask. All the information I have. This should have been the meeting
for him to be at. Next meeting you will see the ask for the 3 on 3 tournament.
David noted there will be another basketball tournament at Emerald Downs around
the same time. Sylves added that one is $125 to get in. Kwok noted this is the
completion right next door.
Andrea Keikkala reported the Chamber is doing a contract for the 2013 directory.
Chamber is using a new company this year. Plus Chamber will be getting a brand
new website with this new company.
