T-Birds may find a roost in Kent
Kent's transformed downtown could get another boost with an arena to house the Seattle
Thunderbirds. The proposal for the 6,500-seat Kent Events Center is a good idea that would
benefit a city that is growing in numbers and in influence.
Kent has aggressively moved to transform a drowsy downtown into a South King County
destination. The change started when the city bought a former chemical plant on the northern
edge of downtown. The plant was leveled and is now the location of Kent Station, an upscale
shopping center with a movie theater and restaurants. City officials hope the arena will fill a void
in the region for a smaller sports and entertainment venue. The arena could accommodate
concerts, graduations, trade shows and, possibly, other minor professional sports teams.
Kent has wasted no time moving the arena through the planning stages, made easier because the
city owns the land, which is next to Kent Station and the Regional Justice Center. The City
Council is receptive to the idea and will take a final vote soon—a vote made easier knowing
there is an anchor tenant.
The Thunderbirds, a team that has called Seattle home for 30 years, averages about 5,000
spectators a game in KeyArena, a number that makes the otherwise cozy Key feel like a hangar.
In Kent, the Thunderbirds would find a city and business community eager for a sporting slap on
the back.
The one sticking point could be finances. The city can pay about 80 percent of the $50 million
project and will try to get the other $10 million from the state.
The arena is another piece of Kent's surge—a surge that has transformed the once-sleepy blue-
collar city into an important regional player.
The arena by no means will be the end of the community's expansion. The next challenge will be
to create downtown housing to complement Kent's rapidly beating civic pulse.
