Arts Commission Minutes Commissioners: Chair Suzanne Smith, Vice Chair Dan Cox, Treasurer Gerard Philpotts, Secretary Susan Bagrationoff, Secretary Christy Caravaglio, Bayard DuBois, Tonya Goodwillie, Campbell Kristenson, Susan Machler, Linda Mackintosh, Colleen Maloney, Hal O’Brien, Michael Taskey, Sandi Westman, (Sherelle Owens, Alternate) March 12, 2019 5:30 p.m. Item Description Action 1. Call to order at 5:32 p.m. by Chair Suzanne Smith 2. Roll Call Excused: Tonya Goodwillie, Hal O’Brien Absent: Susan Machler 3. Welcome new Commissioners Campbell Kristenson Sherelle Owens, Alternate 4. Guests: -Chris White, Coordinator of Arts, World Languages, Health and Physical Education, Kent School District. Chris discussed his background in the arts and goals to build a strong arts program and infuse arts across the curriculum. -Lucia Neare, Artist/Consultant, 4Culture Creative Consultancies program. Lucia discussed her focus on meeting with stakeholders to engage various cultures and develop an inclusive arts plan and activities for downtown Kent. 5. Changes to the Agenda: Addition of item 9.D. Morrill Meadows Public Art 6. January Minutes YES Taskey made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Bagrationoff seconded and the motion carried unanimously. 7. Treasurer’s Report – None 8. Performing Arts Committee A. Spotlight Series 2018-2019 Update: 95% capacity audience of 447 attended Seattle Rock Orchestra on 2/2, 42 people attended Letters Aloud on 2/15, a sold- out crowd of 361 attended International Guitar Night on 3/1. One show remains – Piano Battle on 4/5; currently nearly 200 tickets have been sold. Mackintosh seconded and the motion carried unanimously. 9. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee A. Kent Creates: -Current Exhibit, New Year, deadline 3/31. -Next Exhibit – “Awakening” will be the theme for spring, “Look Up” will be the theme for summer. B. City Art Plan 2019-2023 YES Caravaglio made a motion to approve the art plan. Kristenson seconded and the motion carried unanimously. C. Gallery -Student Art Exhibit (March 11-22) D. Morrill Meadows Parcourse Public Art Project YES Philpotts made a motion to approve final design. Caravaglio seconded. The motion carried with Taskey abstaining. 10. General updates/other business A. CASP Grant change proposal – YES At the Ridge Theatre: Camp scholarships in lieu of low-cost tickets for performances. Taskey made motion to approve. Cox seconded and the motion carried unanimously. B. Give Me Culture Application YES FITNESS for The Culture – Cox made a motion to not fund the project. Taskey seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Staff will direct the applicant to check with appropriate Kent Parks staff about fitness activities. C. Kent Kids’ Arts Day Report – Strong attendance, increase in paid admissions, decline in vouchers redeemed. D. Lunar Rover project – As an informational item, staff explained the project Economic and Community Development is working on to celebrate the anniversary of the lunar rover being built in Kent. E. Arts and Heritage Day Report – Caravaglio and Kristenson attended, reported strong turn-out and focus on funding for the state arts commission. F. SOCO Culture – Meeting next Tuesday in Renton, Arts Commissioner Summit planned for September. G. Kent School District/Arts Education – No additional updates.
