Arts Commission Minutes
Commissioners: Chair Suzanne Smith, Vice Chair Dan Cox, Treasurer Gerard Philpotts,

Item Description
1. Call to order – 5:30 p.m. by Chair Smith
2. Roll Call – Excused: Caravaglio, Goodwillie, O’Brien, Westman
Absent: Susan Machler
3. Guests – Artists Dinah Rau, Erica Peto, Jill Erickson, Joy Hagen, Melissa Koch, and
Cam Kristenson presented proposals for artwork on traffic signal control boxes.
4. Changes to the Agenda – Addition of item 9.F. Community Arts Support Program
5. September Minutes – Taskey made a motion to approve the minutes as written,
DuBois seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
6. Treasurer’s Report – August Month End report routed for review.
7. Performing Arts Committee
A. Spotlight Series 2019-2020
-JigJam – Fri., Sept. 27 – Attended by 215
-Che Apalache – Sat., Oct. 19 – 103 tickets sold, ushers: Cam and Colleen
-CGT + MG3 – Sat., Oct. 26 – 136 tickets sold, ushers: Gerard and Michael
B. Artist review – Meeting to follow
8. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee
A. Public Art
-Traffic Signal Control Box Art Wraps – Cox made a motion to approve the
proposals as presented, including “stained glass forest” option for Dinah Rau and
option B “close-up” for Ken Winnick. Taskey seconded and the motion carried with
Kristenson abstaining due to his participation as an artist.

-City Council Chambers artwork – “Spirit Song” (1989) and “Lacework of the Earth”
(1992) – Discussion around deaccessioning or relocating. Taskey made a motion to
deaccession both pieces and return them to the artist if she is interested in having
them. Mackintosh seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
C. Kent Creates
-Look Up exhibit (7/1 – 9/30) – 31 submissions, winners posted on social media to
stronger than usual engagement
-Next exhibit” “Identity” to run through December 31
9. General updates/other business
A. Creative Consultancies/Downtown Art Plan – general update
B. Give Me Culture application
KSD/Kentridge, “All Kent High School MLK Rally 2020” – Cox made a motion to fully
fund the application at $1,000. Kristenson seconded and the motion carried
unanimously.
C. Meeting time/date - Postponed
D. SOCO Culture – Arts Commissioner Session attended by Maloney and Taskey
E. Kent School District/Arts Education – None
F. Community Arts Support Program 2020 – Application deadline is October 18,
panel (Bagrationoff, Owens, Philpotts, and Westman) will review on November 4.
G. Good of the Order – Taskey will present his art at Capitol Hill Polish Arts Festival,
Kristenson shared that Rusty Raven Gallery celebrated one-year anniversary under
their ownership
10. Next Meeting – Tues., Nov. 12, 5:30 p.m., Location TBD (brief meeting followed by
special work session with Lucia Neare for downtown art planning process)
