HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Committees - Cultural Communities Board - 06/25/2019Kent Cultural Communities Board Meeting June 25, 2019 Minutes Kent, Washington Date: June 25, 2019 Time: 6 p.m. Place: Centennial North and South Attending: Marvin Eckfeldt, Norma Maldonado, Mizan Rahman, Ted Schwarz, Yusuf Bashir, Lelei Masina, Tanya Medina. Absent: Davies Chirwa, Sara Franklin-Phillips, Vaivao Semisi-Tupou, Rand Al Hammadi, Ta Kwe Say, Oleg Pynda, Taffy Johnson. Agenda: 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 6:33 p.m. 2. Roll Call Davies Chirwa, Sara Franklin-Phillips, Vaivao Semisi-Tupou, Rand Al Hammadi, Ta Kwe Say, Oleg Pynda, Taffy Johnson were absent. 3. Approving Minutes Approval of minutes was moved to the next meeting to accommodate last minute presentation by Shivani Lal. 4. Preserving Our History Jason who is a member of the Polish community in the Seattle area began the presentation by talking about the project that his community completed to preserve their own history. The Polish community produced a DVD and book with the help from a 4Culture grant. They also received help from the University of Washington. Question was asked: What History is the community interested in preserving? The Kent history museum expressed their desire to preserve histories from all communities. The University of Washington then presented on best practices when it comes to preserving family and community histories. Kent Cultural Communities Board Meeting June 25, 2019 Minutes Kent, Washington Lelei made the point that many communities have been preserving their histories for generations. Other board members added to Lelei’s statement about how the presenter’s message could be interpreted by other cultures. All board members agreed about the importance of preserving community and family history, but provided further feedback about potential barriers. Yusef mentioned that his community is very complex and there are conflicts within the community that would make it difficult to come together as a Somali community to preserve the history. The group also suggested that History keepers should reach out to student clubs at the University of Washington. The student alliances or coalitions could be able to establish connections with different ethnic communities throughout the region, including Kent. History keepers mentioned that they are hosting a workshop in October. The workshop will be held on Saturday October 12, 2019. 5.
