3. Arts and culture plan for downtown Kent Lucia Neare 45
a. Introductions
b. Mayor had a few words
c. Lucia explained how she is currently partnering with the city of kent to
create a new arts plan for downtown. Opportunity to create a more
welcoming city.
d. Applied to welcoming America to support project in theoretical level. Has
been meeting with community members and organization who help
refugee and immigrant organization. Also trying to work on network to
end silos.
e. Currently collaborating with Green River college. Project is called
imagining a happy time in our community. Will exhibit project at KIF and
city council chambers.
f. Immigrant led international festival. Currently being planned by project
feast.
g. What are barriers that your community faces in sharing their culture with
others?
i. Sports. It is not easy to get what the community needs for
communities in need.
ii. Cultural space needed to express (i.e. dance, art etc)
h. What would make this area look more like your community is
represented
i. We need more translations
ii. More languages displayed on social media etc.
iii. Night market
i. Other groups and organizations can you connect us?
i. Islamic center –
ii. Yusuf – His community organization
iii. Centro Rendu
iv. Look at kent demographics and start there (Census)

J. Could the board find people who could speak on the needs or their community.
They would be anonymous. Recorded by cellphone.
- Would not work for some communities who don’t trust any recording.
k. Need separate approaches based on needs of community. One size will not fit all.

l. What happens with city planning when all voices are heard?
- Legislation is created to support these changes is the goal.
