Arts Commission Minutes Commissioners: Chair Dan Cox, Vice Chair Suzanne Smith, Treasurer Gerard Philpotts, Secretary Susan Bagrationoff, Secretary Christy Caravaglio, Bayard DuBois, Tonya Goodwillie, Campbell Kristenson, Susan Machler, Linda Mackintosh, Colleen Maloney, Hal O’Brien, Michael Taskey, Sandi Westman, (Sherelle Owens, Alternate) July 8, 2020 5:30 p.m. Remote Meeting – Zoom Item Description 1. Call to order – Approximately 5:35 p.m. 2. Roll Call – Excused: Cox, Caravaglio / Absent: Kristenson, Machler 3. Changes to the Agenda – none 4. March Minutes – Philpotts made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Mackintosh seconded and the motion carried, with Owens abstaining since she was not present at the March meeting. 5. Treasurer’s Report – May month end reports were distributed in advance of the meeting along with the agenda and minutes; no discussion. 6. Performing Arts Committee A. Summer Concert Series – 2020 canceled; Spotify playlists are being distributed and promoted. B. Spotlight Series 2020-2021 – October 2020 shows (three in total) have been rescheduled for fall of 2021. We hope to begin Spotlight Series with the Magical Strings Celtic Yuletide Concert in December, subject to School District use and social distancing guidelines. Staff is also pursuing options for streaming concerts. 7. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee A. Public Art/WATER restoration or deaccession – Commissioners reviewed and discussed a rough quote, prepared by ArtSite Ltd., for fixing and reinstalling the sculpture. Public Art/Entry banner replacement – Artist designed banners at the Kent-Des Moines Road/Meeker Street entry are torn, dirty, and need to be replaced. Staff reviewed the situation – i.e. trees have matured around the flag poles, largely obscuring anything hung from them, and limiting options for commissioning new work. Staff proposed simply replacing the banners in the alternate color scheme, which is brighter and will be more visible through the trees. Mackintosh made a motion to authorize staff to use maintenance funding to replace the banners. Philpotts seconded and the motion carried unanimously. C. 2020-2024 City Art Plan – Update on traffic signal boxes (installation on hold; staff hopes to revisit for late summer), Kent Valley Loop Trail directional signage (on hold), Chestnut Ridge renovation (on hold awaiting Parks Planning and Development ability to convene neighbors for input), 4th and Willis Gateway/greenway art (PP&D will keep us posted as the project moves forward.) -Kent Downtown Partnership – KDP approached Arts Commission staff with the idea to collaborate on one or two semi-temporary, rotating murals in downtown. The Commission discussed and is generally in favor of the idea, but would like a more formal proposal. Staff will work with the KDP. D. Gallery -Summer Art Exhibit (through Aug. 20) – Gallery is closed to the public, but will open in Phase 3. Videos are being shared and promoted. -21-22 Gallery Season – Proposed pairings are: James Borchers (painting) and Mycah Higley (collage); Tsehaye Haddish (painting) and Ian Shearer (painting; and Jerry Gordon (drawing) and Lance McMullan (photography). Goodwillie made a motion to approve the proposed gallery shows for 21-22. Westman seconded at the motion carried unanimously. E. Kent Creates: -Kaleidoscope exhibit – Commissioners to complete voting by Thursday, July 9. -Next exhibit – Quarantine Art (through September 30) 8. General updates/other business A. Grant Programs (CASP, Give Me Culture) – Staff is in communication with grant recipients about canceling their awards if programs are canceled. We will be allowed to carry over unused funding for 2021 programs.
