Arts Commission Minutes Commissioners: Chair Dan Cox, Vice Chair Suzanne Smith, Treasurer Gerard Philpotts, Secretary Susan Bagrationoff, Secretary Christy Caravaglio, Bayard DuBois, Tonya Goodwillie, Campbell Kristenson, Susan Machler, Linda Mackintosh, Colleen Maloney, Hal O’Brien, Michael Taskey, Sandi Westman, (Sherelle Owens, Alternate) February 12, 2020 5:30 p.m. Centennial 402, 400 West Gowe Street Item Description 1. Call to order – Chair Dan Cox called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. 2. Roll Call – Excused: O’Brien and Sherelle Owens 3. Guest Presentation – Sound Transit Art Public Art: Ashley Long, Project Manager; Tory and Eroyn Franklin, Artists -The artists presented their initial concept for artwork on the windscreen and under-platform “tunnel” at the Star Lake station. 4. Changes to the Agenda – Addition of items 10E. Give Me Culture application and 10F. 105 Building art 5. January Minutes – Philpotts made a motion to accept the minutes as written. Smith seconded and the motion carried unanimously. 6. Treasurer’s Report 7. Performing Arts Committee A. Spotlight Series 2019-2020 -A.J. Croce – Sold-out show with 360 in attendance -Seattle Rock Orchestra – 85% capacity with 383 in attendance -Carlene Carter – Fri., Feb. 28, 188 (50%) tickets currently sold Ushers: Michael Taskey, Gerard Philpotts B. Spotlight Series 2020-2021 -Update/Approve schedule – Taskey made a motion to approve the schedule with or without the one remaining “tentative” show (Mariachi Herencia de Mexico). Philpotts seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Public Art -2020-2024 City Art Plan – Taskey made a motion to approve the 2020-2024 City Art Plan. Bagrationoff seconded and the motion carried unanimously. B. Gallery -Phil Eidenberg-Knopp and Tara McDermott (January 9 – February 28) C. Kent Creates: -Identity exhibit – Votes were validated and the five winners were notified. -Next exhibit – Kaleidoscope 9. Creative Consultancies/Downtown Art Plan – Discussion regarding Commission’s feedback from January work session. Review of Lucia Neare’s recently submitted report and upcoming schedule. Future meeting with Lucia to hear about her progress and to clarify vision and steps moving forward. 10. General updates/other business A. Arts Advocacy Day – Ronda Billerbeck and Dan Cox attended and met with legislators and/or legislative aids from the 33rd and 47th districts. B. Community Arts Support Recognition – February 4 Council meeting, almost all recipients were able to attend. C. SOCO Culture – None D. Kent School District – None E. Give Me Culture application – Steel Magic Northwest “Blast Into Spring” concert. Caravaglio made a motion to approve the full request of $1,000. Taskey seconded and the motion carried unanimously. F. 105 Building art – staff was able to connect a mural artist with the owner of the 105 Building at the railroad tracks and Smith Street. A temporary mural by Will Schlough will be on the building soon. 11. Next Meeting – Wed., March. 11, 2020, 5:30, Centennial 402, 400 W. Gowe Street 12. Adjournment
