Arts Commission Minutes
Commissioners: Chair Suzanne Smith, Vice Chair Dan Cox, Treasurer Gerard Philpotts,
Christy Caravaglio, Bayard DuBois, Tonya Goodwillie, Bob Howell, Campbell Kristenson, Susan Machler, Linda

Item Description
1. Call to order - Chair Smith called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
2. Roll Call - All Commissioners present
3. Changes to the Agenda - Addition of items 6.B. and 7.D.
4. September Minutes - Cox made a motion to approve the minutes as written.
O'Brien seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
5. Treasurer's Report - Distributed for review.
6. Performing Arts Committee
A. Spotlight Series 2021-2022
-Collision of Rhythm - First show back after 18 months was successful with 116
in attendance (socially distanced seating configuration.) Tap dance master class
at Allegro Performing Arts Academy was attended by 28.
-Luca Stricagnoli - Friday, October 22 (ushers: Bob Howell, Michael Taskey)
-Impact of King County mandate taking effect 10/25: Will check for proof of
vaccination or negative test result.
B. Artist review for 2022-2023 - Staff will begin pulling ideas together and will be
in touch with Performing Arts Committee.
7. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee
A. Public Art Updates:
-Downtown mural project - Dedication was successful on Sept. 24 with
approximately 50 in attendance.
-Traffic Signal Control Box project - 2021 project complete.
-Chestnut Ridge Renovation - Artist will bring initial concept to an Arts
Commission meeting soon (likely November).
Unless otherwise noted, the Arts Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. the 2nd Wednesday of each
month at City Hall, Council Chambers, 220 4th Avenue South, Kent, WA 98032.

B. Gallery
-Tsehaye Haddish/Ian Shearer: September/October
C. Kent Creates - Deadline extended to November 30.
D. Donation - Two large pieces donated from Bank of American portable art
collection. (Teri Cap, 46" x 88" and Artist Unknown, 56" x 114") Kristenson made a
motion to accept the two donated pieces into the City of Kent's portable art
collection. O'Brien seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
8. General updates/other business
A. Community Arts Support Program
-Deadline: 10/29
-Panel: Cox, Philpotts, Maloney, and Westman (Staff will be in touch to select a
date.)
B. SOCO Culture - No updates
C. Kent School District - No updates
D. Commissioner vacancies/appointments - With assistance from Vice Chair Cox,
staff has been reviewing applications (7) and interviewing candidates. This is the
last official meeting for Suzanne Smith, Linda Mackintosh, Susan Machler, and
Tonya Goodwillie who have contributed many years of dedicated service. We thank
them for their time, energy, and insights. We will miss them very much!)
9. Next Meeting - Wed., November 10, 2021, 5:30 p.m. Remote Meeting (TBD)
10. Adjournment - Chair Smith adjourned the meeting at 6:05 p.m.
