Arts Commission Minutes
Commissioners: Chair Suzanne Smith, Vice Chair Dan Cox, Treasurer Gerard Philpotts,
Christy Caravaglio, Bayard DuBois, Tonya Goodwillie, Campbell Kristenson, Susan Machler, Linda Mackintosh,

Item Description
1. Call to order - Chair Smith called the meeting to order at 5:31 p.m.
2. Roll Call - Excused: Owens
3. Guests: Traffic Signal Control Box Art Proposals from artists Susan Hass, Kathleen
Warren and Lina Cholewinski, Hoa Hong, Jordan Remington, Johanna Porter, and
Kelly Loney.
4. Changes to the Agenda - None
5. May and June Minutes - Taskey made a motion to approve both the May and June
minutes as written. Caravaglio seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
6. Treasurer's Report - Distributed for review.
7. Performing Arts Committee
A. Spotlight Series 2021-2022 - Indoor school district facilities, including PACs will
be open for use beginning September 1.
B. Summer Concert Series 2021 - Began on July 7, good crowds and positive
feedback regarding new Wednesday location at Morrill Meadows Park.
8. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee
A. Public Art Updates:
-Downtown mural project - Mural installation is complete; Commission
discussed setting a date later this summer for a dedication event. Details TBD.
-Traffic Signal Control Box project - Caravaglio made a motion to approve all
nine artists' proposals. Taskey seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
-Earthworks bike tour - Caravaglio made a motion to deaccession the tour
markers/poles from the City Art Collection. Taskey seconded and the motion
carried unanimously.
Unless otherwise noted, the Arts Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. the 2nd Wednesday of each
month at Centennial Center, Conference Room 402, 400 West Gowe St., Kent, WA 98032.

-Chestnut Ridge Renovation Update - Parks Planning Manager Terry Jungman
and artist Scott Trimble recorded a video interview that will soon be on the
project website, requesting community input. Design meetings begin this
month.
B. Gallery
-Works by Stephanie Johnson and Sara Brogdon are on display in July and
August. The Gallery opens to the public during regular business hours on
Monday, July 19.
C. Kent Creates:
-Hope Blooms (voting/results): There is currently a glitch in the system, so
finalizing the Hope Blooms exhibit is on hold.
-Free to Roam (deadline Sept. 30)

B. Kent School District - No update
