Arts Commission Minutes

Item Description
1. Call to order - Chair Smith called the meeting to order at 5:32 p.m.
2. Roll Call - Excused: Macher, Kristenson
3. Changes to the Agenda - Item 8.E. Bylaw Changes
4. April Minutes - O'Brien made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Cox
seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
5. Treasurer's Report - Staff distributed for review.
6. Performing Arts Committee
A. Spotlight Series 2021-2022 - Reservation paperwork has been submitted to
school district venues.
B. Summer Concert Series 2021 - Staff is currently working on COVID safe policies
and procedures. Promotional materials will be rolling out soon.
7. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee
A. Public Art Updates:
-Downtown rotating mural project - Artists are submitting their final designs.
Installation in on track for late June.
-Traffic Signal Control Box project - 43 applications received. Artist selection
jury is completing a 2nd round of review and scoring.
-Chestnut Ridge Renovation Update - Staff is working on the artist contract.
B. Gallery: Closed
C. Kent Creates 2021 - Hope Blooms (deadline: June 30)
8. General updates/other business
Unless otherwise noted, the Arts Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. the 2nd Wednesday of each
month at Centennial Center, Conference Room 402, 400 West Gowe St., Kent, WA 98032.

A. Give Me Culture Application: Caravaglio made a motion to approve full funding
($1000) for "Brazil Arts and Education: Un-Reasonable - Sounds of South King County."
Westman seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
B. City Administration Mask project - City administration requested ideas of general
themes for city-produced masks representing the diverse populations of Kent.
Commissioners suggested textile patterns representing various cultures.
C. SOCO Culture - 5/12 meeting featured speakers on the topic of making LGBTQ+
inclusiveness.
D. Kent School District - No Report
E. Bylaw Changes - City Council has recommended changes to standardize the
bylaws of boards and commissions across the City. Staff is currently working with
the Legal Department on potential changes. The biggest adjustments will likely
involve term lengths and limits. Staff will keep Commissioners informed.
9. Next Meeting - Wed., June 9, 2021, 5:30, Zoom
10. Adjournment - Chair Smith adjourned the meeting at 6:14 p.m.
