Arts Commission Minutes
Commissioners: Chair Suzanne Smith, Vice Chair Dan Cox, Treasurer Gerard Philpotts,

Item Description
1. Call to order - Chair Smith called the meeting to order at 5:32 p.m.
2. Roll Call - Bagrationoff, Goodwillie, Taskey (excused), Philpotts (absent)
3. Changes to the Agenda - Change item 8.A. to an action item
4. Guests: Gaila Gutierrez and Suzanne Cameron, KDP
Nick Goettling and Ian Shearer, Artists
5. March Minutes - Caravaglio made a motion to approve the minutes as written.
Kristenson seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
6. Treasurer's Report - Distributed by staff for review.
7. Performing Arts Committee
A. Spotlight Series 2020-2021
-We Banjo 3 Livestream - Two tickets sold
-A.J. Croce Livestream Series - Seventeen tickets sold
B. Spotlight Series 2021-2022 - All but one of the 20/21 shows have been
rescheduled to 21/22 - contracting in progress.
C. Summer Concert Series 2021 - Artist contracts have been issued, staff is
planning for COVID-safe protocols.
8. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee
A. Public Art Updates:
-Downtown rotating mural project: Artists Ian Shearer and Nick Goettling
presented their concept proposals. Arts Commissioners provided feedback.
Mackintosh made a motion to approve Ian Shearers concept. Caravaglio
seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Caravaglio made a motion to

-Traffic Signal Control Box project - Deadline for artists to apply is April 16.
-Chestnut Ridge Renovation - Caravaglio made a motion to move funds from
the City Art Plan opportunity fund to increase the project budget $25,000 to
$88,733. Mackintosh seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

C. Kent Creates:
-2021 - Looking Forward exhibit winners (Renee Hazen, Ken Morris, Liz Ruest,
John Armstrong, Daniel Wend), Hope Blooms (deadline: June 30)
-April - Virtual Kent Student Art Exhibit
9. General updates/other business
A. Give Me Culture Application
-Brazil Arts and Education: Un-Reasonable - Sounds of South King County
Commissioners discussed this project and decided to request additional
information from the applicant. A vote will be scheduled for the May meeting.
B. SOCO Culture - Meeting on May 12 at 10 a.m.
C. Kent School District - No report
D. Good of the order - Commissioners encourage each other to check out the Kent
Reporter article about fellow-Commissioner Susan Bagrationoff's painting "tiny
pantries" around Kent.
