Unless otherwise noted, the Arts Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. the 2nd Wednesday of each
month at City Hall, Council Chambers, 220 4th Avenue South, Kent, WA 98032. For additional

Arts Commission Minutes

Item Description
1. Call to order – Chair Cox called the meeting to order at 5:37 p.m.
2. Roll Call – Excused: DuBois, Ohno, Treese. O’Brien has resigned.
3. Changes to the Agenda – Addition of item 8.G. Springwood Bench
4. Guests: Sound Transit Art Program

Chris Jordan, Artist
Chris Jordan presented his concept for artwork in the Kent Des Moines station
garage, as well as community engagement he will conduct in finalizing the design.
His presentation was followed by questions and discussion.
5. July Minutes – Taskey made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Olmsted
seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
6. Treasurer’s Report – Distributed for review.
7. Performing Arts Committee
A. Summer Concert Series – Final concert scheduled for 8/11 at Lake Meridian.
B. Spotlight Series 2022-2023 – The seven-show season is posted on our website
and tickets are selling. The season brochure should be completed and mailed in the
next couple of weeks.

8. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee
A. Sound Transit – Kent-Des Moines Station art – No further discussion.
B. Titus Railroad Park Mural – Mary Iverson completed the mural at its new location
on 2nd Avenue between Meeker and Gowe Streets.
C. Gallery
-June-August: Summer Art Exhibit closes on August 18. Art pickup day is
August 19.
-September-October – Portable collection works.
D. Chestnut Ridge Public Art – Artwork is completed. Staff will keep Commissioners
posted on ribbon cutting/dedication festivities.
E. Traffic Signal Control Box – Artwork is finalized, installation scheduled for later
this month.
F. Kent Creates – Taskey made a motion to decommission the online sharing
platform due to increased city cyber-insurance costs and the age of the technology.
French seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Staff will work to ensure that
images are archived and that appropriate communication goes out to prior
participants.
G. Springwood Bench, Reclamation Art Project led by artist Ruth Marie Tomlinson,
located at Springwood Park, installed in 1997. Bench is heavily damaged, and the
park is scheduled for renovation in 2024. Caravaglio made a motion to
decommission the piece. Kristenson seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
9. General updates/other business
A. SOCO Culture – No report
B. Alternate position – Kelly Spreitzer has been recommended to fill Hal O’Brien’s
vacant seat. Sandra Pearce has been recommended to fill the vacant alternate
position.
