Arts Commission Minutes Commissioners: Chair Dan Cox, Vice Chair Michael Taskey, Treasurer Gerard Philpotts, Christy Caravaglio, Bayard DuBois, Kerry French, Campbell Kristenson, Colleen Maloney, Hal O’Brien, Bryan Ohno, Ryan Olmsted, Countess Stekovic, Jen Treese, Sandi Westman, (Alternate: Vacant) (Brenda Fincher, City Council Liaison) April 13, 2022 5:30 p.m. City Hall, Council Chambers, 220 4th Avenue South Item Description 1. Call to order – The meeting was called to order by Chair Cox at 5:33 p.m. 2. Roll Call – Excused: Kristenson, O’Brien, Ohno, Olmstead. Resigned: Howell. Olmsted moves from Alternate position to Howell’s vacated position, effective immediately. Staff will recruit for vacant Alternate position. 3. Changes to the Agenda – Additional Give Me Culture Grant application from Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra. (Item 9.A.) 4. Guest: Mayor Dana Ralph 5. March Minutes – Taskey made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Westman seconded and the motion carried unanimously. 6. Treasurer’s Report – Distributed for review 7. Performing Arts Committee A. Spotlight Series 2021-2022 -Alpin Hong – 195 attended public performance. 600 students served through educational outreach activities. -Masters of Hawaiian Music – 266 attended public performance. 25 enjoyed the free afternoon outreach performance at Kent Senior Activity Center. B. 2022-2023 Booking – Update: Five shows confirmed, three offers pending. 8. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee A. Titus Railroad Park Mural – relocation update: Mural will be relocated to Raine & Co. Building. B. Our jurors selected 60 pieces by 33 artists for the show. D. Traffic Signal Control Box – Artist Call Update: Deadline is April 18. E. Kent Creates -Inspired by Greatness – Voting is complete. -Next Exhibit – Here Comes the Sun: Deadline is June 30. -Long term program update – Kent Creates has been flagged as a potential cyber-security risk to the City. This is because the platform is six years old and built with outdated technology. While the risk itself is not significant, the issue may impact the City’s ability to obtain cyber-security insurance. Staff will work with the City’s IT Department to explore options. 9. General updates/other business A. Give Me Cultural Grant Application -Julie Seitz/Art Making/Unveiling at Historic Pet Cemetery: Commissioners request additional information about the specific location of the mural and its visibility to the public/Kent Residents. Action postponed to May meeting. -Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra – Summer Camp: DuBois made a motion to approve the full requested amount of $1,000. Taskey seconded and the motion carried unanimously. B. SOCO Culture – Report: May 11 general membership meeting 10. Next Meeting – Wed., May 11, 2022, City Hall, Council Chambers 11.
