FROM: Kurt Hanson, Deputy Director of Economic and Community
Development
SUBJECT: Resolution to Surplus Naden Avenue Properties – Recommend
MOTION: Recommend Council adopt a resolution declaring the Naden
Avenue properties surplus to the City’s needs, and authorize the Mayor to
take all appropriate actions to market the properties for sale or lease in
one or more phases.
SUMMARY: In 2006, the city began purchasing properties for the Naden Avenue
area. This was done in an effort to assemble a campus for a future Kent Aquatics
Center. Following the completion of the aquatic center concept design process in
July 2008, the City Council determined that the project would not move forward
due in part to the onset of the recession.
As the region began to recover from the recession, the City began to seek
alternative ways to provide a community aquatic facility. Currently, the City is in
partnership with the YMCA to construct a facility that would include a community
aquatic center on Kent’s east hill.
On June 16, 2016, the surplus consideration was presented at Parks and Human
Services Committee and then, in accordance with Chapter 3.12 of the Kent City
Code, Council scheduled an informational public meeting on July 1, 2016 to receive
public comment and assist Council in its determination as to whether the Naden
properties should be surplused. Two interested parties came to the meeting and the
only comments received were in support of surplusing the properties.
