Washington Robotics
“The sport of science, technology, and teamwork.”
November 25, 2015
Dear City of Kent’s Lodging Tax Advisory Committee,
Washington FIRST ® Robotics strives to inspire students in grades K-12th to pursue careers in science and
technology by engaging them in exciting, after-school robotics programs. Over 11,000 Washington State
students comprising of 1,007 teams compete across all four programs. Of these teams, 35 compete in FIRST
LEGO League (FLL) and 35 compete in FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). Over the last year we have built some great
working relationships with the city, school district, chamber of commerce, Showare and many of you. It’s
exciting to see how our groups are coming together for the young people of Kent and South King County.
We are thrilled to once again bring the FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge State Championships to
ShoWare Center in Kent on Saturday, January 30th, 2016. This event will bring over 1,000 students in grades
4th-12th to Kent and help promote the city’s tourism. Students and their families will be travelling to Kent from
all of the state. While we do not know specifics as of yet due to the competition schedule, we are confident
that we will have many teams from around the state who will advance to these state championships.
Washington FIRST Robotics is requesting $5,000 from the City of Kent’s Lodging Tax Advisory Committee to
financially underwrite the FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge State Championships at ShoWare
Center. FIRST Tech Challenge’s competition season began last weekend and FIRST LEGO League begins the
December 5th. By the second week of December we will have information on our website sharing hotel options
for teams and families who advance to the FLL and FTC state championships at ShoWare. We will also share
information about activities that teams and families can take advantage of during their stay in Kent.
With your consideration, Washington FIRST Robotics is one step closer to engaging more children of South King
County in the sport of science, technology and teamwork. Thank you for your consideration, and should you
have further questions about Washington FIRST Robotics or this proposal, feel free to contact me at
erin@firstwa.org .
Sincerely,
Erin McCallum

Getting people to Eat, Drink, Stay and Play in Kent!
This proposal has been designed specifically to achieve the goals and objectives of
VisitKent.com as defined by Andrew Hutchison in our discovery meeting earlier this year.
In our conversations, there were three specific objectives he identified as key to a
successful partnership…
1.Raise awareness of VisitKent.com to people from around the region
2.Educate people about opportunities to eat, shop, stay and play in Kent
3.Put Heads in Beds
Every single element in this partnership proposal has been selected specifically to assist
VisitKent.com in achieving these goals. The combining of ALL of these elements together
leads us to achieving the desired outcome of having people come to Kent, and spend
their money and time in Kent.

Number of rooms nights directly attributed to
the Seattle Thunderbirds
Thunderbirds Training Camp 250+ room nights
Thunderbirds Parents Weekend 60-70 room nights
Visiting Team room nights (Thunderbirds) 400+ room nights*
(*Based on Conversations with visiting teams)
Thunderbirds playoff games (17-20 rooms each night for 3-6 nights per ROUND)
If the Thunderbirds make just 2 rounds of the playoffs it would men an additional 150 – 200 room nights
Over the course of the season the Thunderbirds generate nearly 1,000 room nights draw
over 150,000 fans to Kent to spend money in restaurants and shopping.
Add to that, the over 150,000 fans the Thunderbirds draw to Kent to spend money in
restaurants and shopping each year. You can see the significant impact the team makes
on the success of the business community in Kent.

In addition to Thunderbirds Hockey, there are a wide range of events that have a major
impact on room nights in Kent. Recently these have included…
•Cross fit (hundreds of contestants for multiple days)
•International Roller Derby Championship (multiple teams for 5 days)
•Disney on Ice (multiple days)
•Disney Live (Three shows)
•Ringling Brothers Circus (multiple days)
•Graduations (16 graduations last year)
•Other Sporting Events, Concerts, Family shows and so much more.
In addition to room nights, these people are looking for things to do and places to eat.
For example, this year ShoWare Center hosted over 50,000 guests for graduations in June.
These are people coming to the Kent Area looking for places to celebrate with family and
friends. By using VisitKent.com they would keep those dollars right here in our community.

PRINT AT HOME TICKETS
Over forty percent of all ShoWare Center tickets are print at home. By owning an ad on the bottom of these
tickets, you put your web address in their hands as they begin planning their trip to Kent. These are people
traveling to the area for Concerts, Family Shows, sporting events and more. This gives us the best chance to
keep these people spending their money right here in Kent.
VIDEO “BUG”
All Thunderbirds games are available streaming from ShoWare Center. We will create a VisitKent.com “bug” that
is placed on the streaming video that is watched from anywhere on the internet. These broadcasts are
watched by fans and even coaches from other teams as they follow not only their team, but other teams in the
Western Hockey League as well. These are people that are a great target to visit and stay in Kent.
VisitKent.com
HOCKEY SIGNAGE
