Kent Human Services Commission November 17, 2016 Minutes Kent, Washington Approval Pending Date: November 17, 2017 Time: 2:30 p.m. Place: Council Chambers East/West Attending: Mike Heinisch, Commissioner Chair Andy Rosas, Co-Chair Gina Bellisario, Commissioner Wade Schwartz, Commissioner Bill Hallerman, Commissioner Zenovia Harris, Commissioner Absent: Shatha Abbas Commissioner Amelia Drake, Commissioner Dennis Higgins, City Council VACANT Student Commissioner Agenda: 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:30 p.m., with Mike Heinisch presiding. 2. Roll Call Three Commissioners were absent and one position vacant. 3. Changes to the Agenda None 4. Approval of Minutes, dated October 20, 2016 Commissioner Bellisario MOVED to approve the Minutes of October 20, 2016, and Commissioner Rosas SECONDED the motion. The motion passed unanimously by a vote of 6-0. 5. Jewish Family Services Rebecca from Jewish Family Services facilitated a presentation on the Tatweer Employment Program. Tatweer, an initiative from Jewish Family Service, helps meet the needs of resettled refugees who have professional degrees and experience. Volunteer mentors provide coaching and support to help these skilled professionals get on track to career path jobs and participants receive one-on-one, industry-specific mentorship. 1 Kent Human Services Commission November 17, 2016 Minutes Kent, Washington Approval Pending 6. Mentoring Program Johnetta Rowsey in partnership with JFS and Economic and Community Development, has started an internal mentorship program utilizing Tatweer participants. Positions have been created in the Public Works Department to accommodate immigrant professionals from similar professional backgrounds in term-limited positions. 7. Parallel Application Process (Dinah) Recommendations for 6 organizations have been made. The Seattle Foundation will provide a dollar for dollar match for agencies funded. Agencies will be funded on a two year cycle. 8. Approval of Parallel Application Recommendations Commissioner Harris MOTIONED to APPROVE the Recommendations. Commissioner Rosas SECONDED. Motion approved. 9. United Way King County (Lori) An application process is to open in January focusing on legal advocacy and services for domestic violence victims and victims of sexual assault.
