HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Committees - Cultural Communities Board - 04/25/2017 KENT CULTURAL COMMUNITIES BOARD MEETING MINUTES April 25, 2017, 6:30 pm Kent Senior Center _______________________________________________________________ Attending: Yusuf Bashir, Marvin Eckfeldt, Rand Al Hammadi, Josephine Karanja, Satwinder Kaur, Hussein Al Kinani, Mizanur Rahman, Ta Kwe Say, Ted Schwarz, Pastor Herbert Carey, Norma Maldonado, and Vaivao Semisi-Tupou. Absent: Marwa Almusawi, Yuriy Zaremba, Beabe Akpojovwo, Cesar Rangel, Davies Chirwa, Shamso Issak, Sharnkeep Kaur, and Dr. Sonia Morales. Elected Officials, Staff & Guests: Mayor Suzette Cooke and Councilmember Jim Berrios. Vice-Chair Kaur called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. Roll call – attendees listed above. March minutes approved. Announcements: Living Well Kent will host their first event on Saturday, May 13 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at Morrill Meadows Park. Khalsa Day Parade will take place on Sunday, May 21 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at ShoWare Center in Kent. Guru Granth Sahib (Holy Book) will be on display in the center of ShoWare. Children’s Home Society’s Graduation will take place Tuesday, May 16, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. Graduation is for ages 19 months to 3 years. Islamic Center of Kent will host an open house on Sunday, April 30 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Assignments - City Council Meeting presenters: May 16 – Satwinder Kaur June 6 – Norma Maldonado June 20 – Yusuf Bashir July 5 – Marvin Eckfeldt July 18 – Mizanur Rahman August 15 – Josephine Karanja September 5 - Vaivao Semisi-Tupou September 19 - Hussein Al Kinani Open House/Educational Tour of Faith-Based Institutions (places): Muslim/Islamic Centers (3 in City of Kent) Sikh Temple ( 1 in City of Kent - 1 in Renton) Coalition for Refugees from Burma Iraqi Community Services Jewish Family Service African American- Kent Black Action Commission-KBAC (Juneteenth Celebration) Mother Africa NW Community of Burma World Relief (WR)/Lutheran Community Services Northwest LCSNW) – Invite to speak to CCB Q&A at Cultural Centers: Need for outreach assistance with immigrants for all that live here – housing, utility bills, green cards, etc. Invite case managers from Lutheran Services, World Relief and International Rescue Committee June 20 CCB will meet.
