HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Committees - Cultural Communities Board - 01/24/20171 APPROVAL PENDING Cultural Communities Board (CCB) Meeting Notes January 24, 2017 Green River College – Kent Station (Room 323) 417 Ramsay Way Kent, WA 98032 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Board Members Present: Yusuf Bashir, Davies Chirwa, Marvin Eckfeldt, Rand Al Hammadi, Josephine Karanja, Satwinder Kaur, Shanrkeep Kaur Shoker, Sonia Morales, Mizan Rahman, Cesar Rangel, Ted Schwarz, Semisi Vaivao Tupou, Norma Maldonado, Marwa Almusawi Absent: Hussein Kinani, Yuriy Zaremba, Ta Kwe Say City Staff Present: Mayor Suzette Cooke, Dinah Wilson, Hardy Awadjie City Council Members: Brenda Fincher, Jim Berrios, Dana Ralph Guests: LeAnn Lofgran, Cindy Hayward, Tiffany Carbajal, Dick Wing (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Planning youth conference for February 23rd-25th, 2017-service project by youth for refugee community) Welcome Dinah Wilson and Mayor Suzette Cooke December 2016 CCB Minutes approval Motion to approve – Ted Schwarz Announcements (only current announcements are included)  Iraqi Community Food Festival (Aldarboune Food Festival) - Iraqi Center, Saturday, February 25, 2017  Free income tax electronic filing help -(AARP) – Kent Library (for low income individuals only) February 13, 2017, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM -Public Health (Kent East Hill next to Home Depot) Tuesdays 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Thursdays 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Saturdays 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (no small business taxes)  Bengalese New Year’s celebration – April 15, 2017 (5:00 PM-10:00 PM) Kent Senior Activity Center – Food/Music/Activities  Reserving City of Kent Parks during summer months for CCB meetings and activities 2  Training: How to facilitate meetings - Parliamentary procedures made fun (Robert’s Rules of Order) - February 13, 2017 @ 6:30 PM (Council Chambers or TBD) Trainer – Ann MacFarlane of Jurassic Parliament 3 CCB Discussion  CCB elected a Chair (Satwinder Kaur) and Vice-Chair (Cesar Rangel); the meeting facilitation was turned over to Satwinder  Youth arrest (incarceration rate) follow-up – Previous CCB meeting item- data, which includes referrals from KSD, was passed out CCB Action Plan (priorities identified by the Board, not listed in order of importance) 1. Organizing local MLK Day event in 2018 2. Policing (Chief Thomas will be invited to the February meeting; CCB may invite up to three guests) 3. Health/Housing: Quality & longevity of life 4. Education: CCB (organize a panel) + community engagement w/Kent School District (Q&A)  Based on the discussion, CCB decided to invite Chief Thomas to the February 2017 CCB meeting (CCB members may invite up to three guests) Items for follow-up  The Kent City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting source of income discrimination in rental housing (City Council members present shared information about the ordinance; staff will provide an electronic copy of the ordinance to CCB members)  CCB expressed an interest in creating an orientation to American Culture pamphlet (Dinah will research and provide samples for CCB to review)  There is also interest in inviting decision-makers to the meeting to provide background on various topics; e.g., what is the role of CPS and how does staff decide when to intervene in families?
