Arts Commission Minutes Commissioners: Chair Dan Cox, Vice Chair Suzanne Smith, Treasurer Vacant, Secretary Tonya Goodwillie, Secretary Linda Mackintosh, Christy Caravaglio, Bayard DuBois, Susan Machler, Colleen Maloney, Hal O’Brien, Gerard Philpotts, Michael Taskey, Emily Taskey, Vacant October 17, 2017 5:30 p.m. Item Description Action Speaker Time 1. August Minutes YES Chair Cox M. Taskey made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Mackintosh seconded and the motion carried unanimously. 5. Treasurer’s Report – Reviewed and filed NO 6. Performing Arts Committee Staff Billerbeck A. Spotlight Series Update NO -Wylie and the Wild West, 10/6, 7:30 p.m., K-M – 139 people attended, Commission discussed signage issues. -Las Migas, 10/27, 7:30 p.m., Kent Lutheran Church – 76 tickets sold. 7. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee Staff Billerbeck A. Kent Creates: NO -Holiday Traditions exhibit open B. 2017-2021 City Art Plan: Traffic control boxes YES -Proposals from artists -Smith made a motion to select “Bumble-Bee Brigade” as the final image from artist Vikram Madan. Mackintosh seconded and the motion carried unanimously. -M. Taskey made a motion to select Fin’es Scott’s proposal #2 without neighborhood names. Philpotts seconded and the motion passed (no vote from Smith). -Mackintosh made a motion to accept all five artist proposals. Smith seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Deaccession YES -Peace Mosaic Mural, Maurico Robalino, Lake Meridian Park, 1997 Mackintosh made a motion to deaccession Peace Mosaic Mural from the City Art Collection based on upcoming remodel of the Lake Meridian building and on- going maintenance challenges. M. Taskey seconded and the motion carried unanimously. -Potential: Spirit Song (1990) and Lacework of the Earth (1992), Dana Boussard, Council Chambers (deaccession or move?) Staff has contacted the artist and will provide a report in November. D. 2017-2021 City Art Plan: Morrill Meadows/ NO East Hill Park art -Parcourse pieces – Call for artists – coming soon E. Meet Me on Meeker NO -Potential Projects – Will discuss at a future meeting 8. General updates/other business Staff Billerbeck A. Commissioner reappointments/vacancies NO New Commissioner, Martha Cunningham, to be appointed at November 7 City Council meeting; one remaining vacancy. B. Kent School District – no updates NO C. Give Me Culture application – Project Feast YES M. Taskey made a motion to decline funding the proposed mural project in the Titusville Station building. Smith seconded and the motion carried (with Philpotts abstaining). The Commission noted that they are supportive of Project Feast’s mission and the ideas to use the space for community gathering and artwork displays. However, they did not feel that public funding should be used for tenant improvements to a private building. D. Nominating committee for 2018 officers NO Chair Cox will contact Commissioners over the next month. E. Community Arts Support Program review panel NO Philpotts, Maloney, and Taskey will serve; panel to be scheduled for early November. 9. Next Meeting – Tues., Nov. 14, 5:30 p.m. NO Staff Billerbeck 10.
