Arts Commission Minutes Commissioners: Chair Dan Cox, Vice Chair Suzanne Smith, Treasurer Sharona Chandra, Secretary Tonya Goodwillie, Secretary Linda Mackintosh, Christy Caravaglio, Bayard DuBois, Susan Machler, Colleen Maloney, Hal O’Brien, Gerard Philpotts, Michael Taskey, Jen Treese, Emily Taskey August 8, 2017 5:30 p.m. Item Description Action Speaker 1. Changes to the Agenda – Addition of two Give Staff Billerbeck Me Culture grant applications: item number 10. 4. June Minutes YES Chair Cox M. Taskey made a motion to approve the June minutes as submitted. Mackintosh seconded and the motion carried unanimously. 5. Treasurer’s Report NO Treasurer Chandra June month end reports were circulated for review. 6. Guest: Sarah Kavage, Artist NO Sound Transit Community Research – Ms. Kavage led the Commission in a discussion about places, history, people, and values that make Kent unique. 7. Performing Arts Committee Staff Billerbeck A. Summer Concert Series Report NO -4 of 6 weeks complete. 380 average Wednesday attendance, 600 average on Thursdays. B. Spotlight Series Update NO Tickets on sale, season brochures will be printed and mailed soon. 8. Visual Arts/Acquisitions Committee Staff Billerbeck A. Kent Creates: NO -Farmer’s Market update – 22 submissions, 5 winners selected -Next exhibit – The Commission agreed to host one more on-line exhibit for 2017; to be launched in Sept. and run through the end of the year. General call for submissions/no theme. The panel selected: Jean Bradbury, Jill Erickson, Vikram Madan, Naoko Morisawa, Fin’es Scott. The Commission discussed which artist to assign to which box location – Bradbury (240th & 104th), Erickson (Hwy 167 & Willis), Madan (Interurban & James), Morisawa (101st & 256th), and Scott (Interurban & ShoWare). Treese made a motion to accept the panel recommendation, along with the Commission’s location matches. M. Taskey seconded and the motion carried unanimously. C. 2017-2021 City Art Plan: Morrill Meadows/ NO East Hill Park art -Parcourse pieces – Call for artists – coming soon. D. Sound Transit Federal Way Link Extension NO -Update – No update at this time. 9. General updates/other business Staff Billerbeck A. Access for All update NO Proposition 1 appeared on the August primary ballot for King County voters. The proposition was defeated, receiving 49% of the vote. B. Kent School District NO Billerbeck reported that she sent an email to Supt. Watts, thanking him for his support of arts and schools as evidenced by his Seattle Times op-ed in favor of Prop 1. The email also detailed the Arts Commission’s ongoing educational offerings for Kent schools, and the frequent difficulties we experience getting the programs into schools. No response has been received. 10. Give Me Culture applications YES Staff Billerbeck A. Gary Stroutsos “Remembering the Songs” -The Commission decided against funding this application. Philpotts made a motion, Treese seconded, and the motion carried unanimously. B. Project Feast “Community Mural” -The Commission discussed their interest in this project and would like to see an updated proposal once an artist is selected and a design is completed. 11.
