Changes to the Agenda Chief Padilla indicated there were no changes to the agenda. 4. Approval of Minutes dated August 14, 2018 MOTION: Move to approve the Minutes dated August 14, 2018 RESULT: APPROVED [UNANIMOUS] MOVER: Satwinder Kaur, Councilmember SECONDER: Toni Troutner, Committee Chair AYES: Troutner, Kaur EXCUSED: Boyce, Thomas 5. 2018 SAMHSA Drug Free Communities Grant Sara Wood spoke on the 2018 SAMHSA Drug Free Communities Grant. This is the final year of a ten-year grant for drug and alcohol prevention activities identified by the Kent Drug Free Coalition, Kent Police Youth Board projects, including the Game of Life youth conference. MOTION: Recommend Council authorize the Mayor to sign the Drug Free Communities Support Program Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in the amount of Public Safety Committee CC PS Regular Meeting Minutes September 11, 2018 Kent, Washington Page 2 of 2 $125,000, amend the budget, and authorize expenditure of the grant funds in accordance with the grant’s terms and conditions. Community Police Academy Maureen McCaughan announced the upcoming, 10 week long, Community Police Academy starting on September 26. 7. Chief's Update Chief Padilla provided the following updates and announcements: A Racer Emphasis was held over the summer. Total arrests-75, vehicles impounded-37, and dozens of tickets were issued. Department is currently down 17 positions. We are working on revamping our hiring process to speed it up. Coffee with the Chief Thursday, September 13, 6:00pm at Cutter's Point Coffee. Block Watch 101 Training begins September 18. Community Meeting September 18 topic - Homelessness Officer Kevin Strong is new School Resource Officer at KM. Funding will be continued for Alive & Free gang intervention program and the Sexual Criminal Exploitation of Children Advocate at Kent Youth and Family Services. Chair Toni Troutner asked about the Facebook Live event coming up. The date is to be determined. Council member Satwinder Kaur mentioned a business that was recently graffitied with swastikas. 8.
