1. Call to Order
Commissioner Bellisario called to order at 2:35 p.m.
2. Roll Call
Two Commissioners are absent.
3. Changes to the Agenda
Move item 5 to next month when Council member Higgins and Commissioner
Robinson can attend.
4. Approval of Minutes
Commissioner Rosas MOVED to approve pending minutes from June 21, 2018 and
Commissioner Hallerman SECONDED.
5. Commission membership Update (Merina)
Staff has been asked to identify and make recommendations to the Mayor for
commission appointment. Currently there is one commissioner vacancy, one
student vacancy and an alternate position vacancy.

6. Cultural Communities Board and Community Engagement (Uriel Varela)
Community Engagement Coordinator, Uriel Varela, spoke to the efforts of the City
and Cultural Communities Board and its roll of increasing civic engagement among
the diverse and ethnic communities in Kent. Uriel shared a timeline of the Cultural
Communities Board showing the evolution, changes and progress since its
inception. Kent’s population is a Minority majority. Refugee resettlement has seen a
decline however, the Ukrainian population is at is highest and we are continuing to
see an increase in arrivals.
7. Annual Commission Planning (Lori/Christine)
Commissioners are interested in visiting several of our newly funded agencies.

• Partners in Employment
• Bridges
• Mary’s Place
Focus areas that commission identified for discussion at future meeting include:
• Homelessness
• Opiates
• Youth Violence
• Foster Care
• Shelter
• Food Insecurity
• Education
8. Updates
• The Parallel Application is currently open. Applicants with a budget of 250k or
less can apply for funding from Kent and Federal Way. The application and
more information can be found here

• Staff are doing research and assessments, community engagement working
through three stages of development for the Human Services Master Plan
and Consolidated Plan due November 2019. Updates and community
meetings to be announced throughout the process.
• Mary’s Place is hosting an open house and BBQ Tuesday September 25th.
Guests will be able to tour the facility that can house up to 200 people
including Children with complex medical needs.
