HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Committees - Cultural Communities Board - 09/25/2018Kent Cultural Communities Board Meeting September 25, 2018 Minutes Kent, Washington Date: September 25, 2018 Time: 6 p.m. Place: Centennial North and South Attending: Cesar Rangel, Marvin Eckfeldt, Mizan Rahman, Ted Schwarz, Yusuf Bashir, Sara Franklin-Phillips, Rand Al Hammadi, Marwa Absent: Vaivao Semisi-Tupou, Ta Kwe Say, Norma Maldonado, Davies Chirwa Agenda: 1. Call to Order Cesar Rangel 6:32 p.m. 2. Roll Call Vaivao Semisi-Tupou, Ta Kwe Say, Norma Maldonado, Davies Chirwa were absent. 3. Changes to the agenda None 4. Presentation by Marwa The subject of the presentation by Marwa was “Muslim women narratives and representation in popular culture. Marwa conducted an activity to see how board members see Muslim women. She talked about the polarizing collective in popular culture. Muslim women are also portrayed as beautiful and exotic. Strong narrative about “a need to save them.” A crusade to save Muslim women. The feminist movement has added to the stereotype. Marwa also talked about internalized oppression. Misogyny transcends religion, geography etc. She recommended a book titled, “Do Muslim women need saving?” 5. Non-Motorized transportation April Delchamps made a presentation about the current work being conducted in preparation for the Transportation Master plan. She showed the group a large map of the city, highlighting the various transportation modes available. Board members provided input as to where they see the need for more non-motorized transportation in our city. Sikh Captain America Vishavjit Singh, also known as Sikh Captain America made a presentation to the board about his experience and struggles with his own identity. Mr. sing is a caricaturist and used some of his drawings to share how his life as a Sikh man was changed after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01. The main point of his presentation had to do with the idea that no one should be ashamed of where they come from 5.
