Shortly after the dispatch call, it was reported that the male had collapsed to the ground and was not breathing. CPR was started by a citizen. Officer Jeremiah Johnson and Officer Doug Westcott were both driving to work in their department issued take-home vehicles. Despite not yet being on duty, both officers immediately requested they be added to the call. Due to their incredibly selfless actions, and realization that they are issued take- home vehicles for events such as this, they both responded and were first on the scene. Upon arrival Officers Johnson and Westcott located the victim who was unresponsive on the floor of the store. Officer Johnson immediately made ready his Automated External Defibrillator as Officer Westcott began giving CPR. Working together, they attached the AED while continuing CPR. A shock was advised and administered, and CPR was continued. They were able to revive the victim as fire personnel were arriving. Officers Johnson and Westcott are being commended for their quick response, immediate action, and display of selflessness, and are the only reason the victim is alive today.
