CITY OF KENT- CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES
The City of Kent Civil Service Commission met on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at
5:30 p.m. in Chambers West for the regular meeting. The following information was
discussed:
Members Present: Callius Zaratkiewicz-
Pauline Thomas
Jeff Piecewicz
Others Present: No others present
Chair Zaratkiewicz asked those present to review the ‘Accept Into Record’ items 1-18
under New Business. He then called the meeting to order at 5:31 p.m. after giving
the audience time to review said items.

A. Accept Into Record
1. Approval of the Minutes from the July 23, 2014 Civil Service Commission
meeting.
Commissioner Thomas made a motion to accept into record the minutes from the
July 23, 2014 Civil Service Commission meeting. Motion was moved and seconded;
motion passed.
IV. NEW BUSINESS:
A. Accept into Record
1. Letter dated July 21, 2014 from Ofr. David Beerbower tendering his
resignation effective July 31, 2014.
2. Memo dated July 25, 2014 from Chief Thomas noting that Cmdr. Jarod Kasner
and Cmdr. Todd Durham will be assigned as Assistant Chief while A/C Derek
Kammerzell is on vacation.
3. E-mail dated July 31, 2014 from Cmdr. Jarod Kasner noting that Ofrs. Mark
Williams, Lyndon Baron, and Will Davis have been selected as Field Training
Officers.
4. Memo dated August 5, 2014 from Chief Thomas notifying the Commission that
Sgt. Tim Lontz will be assigned as Acting Commander from August 11-16,
2014.
5. Memo dated August 5, 2014 from Chief Thomas notifying the Commission that
Det. Rodger Kellams will be assigned as Acting Sergeant from August 10-17,
2014.

6. Memo dated August 5, 2014 from Chief Thomas notifying the Commission that
Ofr. Jeff Kluzak will be assigned as Acting Sergeant from August 8-15, 2014.
7. Letters dated August 5, 2014 from Chief Examiner Winecka to Entry Level
Police Officer candidates Joshua Johnson, Shaunn Murphy, and Aimee Rogers
notifying them that their names have been removed from the Continuous
Testing Eligibility list per their requests to withdraw from the process.
8. E-mail dated August 8, 2014 from Chief Thomas to the Police department
notifying them that Ofr. Glenn Lowrey has retired.
9. Letter dated August 13, 2014 from Chief Examiner Winecka to Robert Nelson
notifying him that his name has been removed from the Continuous Testing
Eligibility List for Entry Level Police Officer effective August 13, 2014.
10. Letter dated August 13, 2014 from Chief Examiner Winecka to Entry Level
Police Officer candidates Paul Ena notifying him that his name has been
removed from the Continuous Testing Eligibility list per his request to
withdraw from the process.
11. Letter dated August 13, 2014 from Chief Thomas to Andrea Walton
congratulating her on being hired as a Probationary Police Recruit Officer
effective September 2, 2014.
12. Letter dated August 14, 2014 from Ofr. Hans Mak to Chief Thomas notifying
him of his retirement effective August 31, 2014.
13. Memo dated August 14, 2014 from Chief Thomas accepting the retirement of
Ofr. Hans Mak effective August 31, 2014.
14. Memo dated August 19, 2014 from Chief Thomas notifying the Commission
that A/C Jon Straus will be assigned as Acting Chief from September 2-5,
2014.
15. Memo dated August 14, 2014 from Chief Thomas notifying the Commission
that Ofr. Kevin Bateman will be assigned as Acting Traffic Sergeant from July
22-25, 2014.
16. Memo dated August 19, 2014 from Chief Thomas notifying the Commission
that Ofr. Donovan Dexheimer will be assigned as Acting Traffic Sergeant from
August 8-15, 2014.
17. Memo dated August 19, 2014 from Chief Thomas notifying the Commission
that Ofr. Derrick Focht will be Acting Sergeant on August 7 as well as from
August 11-15, 2014.
18. Memo dated August 19, 2014 from Chief Thomas notifying the Commission
that Det. Tami Honda will assigned as Acting Detective Sergeant from
September 2-12, 2014.
Commissioner Zaratkiewicz asked if there were any questions on items 1-18. There
being no questions, Chair Zaratkiewicz made a motion to accept into record items
one through eighteen. Motion was moved and seconded; motion passed.
B. Approve into Record:
1. Continuous Testing Eligibility list for the position of Entry Level Police Officer
that was established on August 13, 2014.
2. Continuous Testing Eligibility list for the position of Lateral/Experienced Police
Officer that was established on August 15, 2014.

Commissioner Zaratkiewicz asked if there were any questions on items one and two.
There being no questions, Chair Zaratkiewicz made a motion to approve into record
items one and two. Motion was moved and seconded; motion passed.
C. Action Items for Discussion:
There were no action items for discussion.
Chair Zaratkiewicz then asked if there was any further business to come before the
Commission. There being no further business, Commissioner Thomas made a
motion to adjourn. Motion was moved and seconded and the meeting adjourned at
5:37 PM. The next meeting of the Civil Service Commission will take place on
Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers.
