Re: Changes to Entry Level and Lateral Police Officer Testing Process
Dear Commissioners:
This memo serves to inform the Commission on proposed changes to the Entry Level and
Lateral Police Officer testing processes that the Chief Examiner has been working to
implement in concert with the Police department. These proposed changes have support
from Chief Thomas, Police Administration, as well as the Kent Police Officers Association
(KPOA).
Our current testing process for entry level police candidates consists of the following:
• Written exam and physical agility test (administered by PublicSafetyTesting.com)
• A standardized pre-screen document is sent to those individuals that successfully
pass the written and physical agility exams. (The intent of the pre-screen
document is to assess automatic disqualifiers.)
• The Chief Examiner (or designee) determines if applicants are eligible to continue
based on their responses to the pre-screen document.
• Candidates that pass the written, physical, and pre-screen are then invited to the
oral board interview in direct relation to their written test score
• The interview consists of behavioral-based and situational interview questions that
are evaluated against set dimensions
• Candidates that pass the oral board interview are placed on the eligibility list in
rank order of their oral board score
• The Police department conducts a background investigation, polygraph
examination, and a final Chief's interview
• If a conditional offer of employment is made, the candidate then completes a
psychological and medical examination

Chief Thomas,
I regret to inform you I will be resigning from the City of Kent Police Department effective Dec Vt 2014.
My last day with the city will be November 30th.Although there's still over a month I wanted to give you
all a heads up so you had some time to decide on my position in NRT. My last"working"day will be
sometime around the 19th or 20th of November. My exit interview is scheduled for November 13th at
gam with HR.
I want to thank you all for the opportunities that you've given me and in all I have had a great pleasure
working for the city. NRT has been an invaluable experience and I wish every Officer could experience
this position. My wife accepted a financial analyst position back in our homeland so we will be headed
back to Michigan. This will be what's best for our family and our kids. Again thank you and your staff for
the experience and I wish you and everyone else the best in the future. I imagine between now and then
I'll run into you so we'll have time to talk in person.Take Care.
