Thomas, Ken From: Pagel,John RECEIVED Sent: Friday, March 21, 2014 6:01 PM To: Thomas, Ken;Winecka, Natalie ((•• Subject: Retirement APR U 7 2014 Human ResourCes City of Kent Chief Thomas, My e-mail to you on February 22, 2014 regarding my retirement was a little informal so I wanted to send one to you and Natalie to be used for the official record. After almost 29 years of service I am going to retire after my shift on March 31, 2014. During my career I have had the opportunity to serve in many capacities and ranks. I feel very fortunate to have had so many opportunities that made me both a better police officer and person. I am extremely grateful to the City of Kent and the Kent Community for giving me the opportunity to serve. To me success in any career is defined by developing positive relationships. I have worked with employees from every department in the city and I've found them to be the finest group of people I've ever been associated with. I have also been able to meet many citizens, business people, and community leaders in my travels and found those relationships had a positive influence on my life. In a certain way it makes me sad to leave but I think most people know when their time is up and it is definitely time for me to step aside. I take nothing but the best of memories along with me. Respectfully, John Pagel 1 RECEIVED i MAR 2 4 2014 Dear Chief Thomas, Human Resources j City of Kent I would like to start off by saying thank you for the opportunity that you have provided me. I am truly grateful for it. I am writing this letter to inform you of my resignation. This decision is based on personal reasons and has nothing to do with the Police Department. I know and understand my FTO training DOR's were not the greatest, but I honestly believe that I was making progress each day I put on the uniform. The FTO program is intense and nothing like what I have experienced in the past. My biggest challenge has been geography which affected my response time to calls. I have shown an improvement in this area, but not as quickly as expected. I have put in a lot of time and effort in this area both on and off duty, just like the department has put into me, but it takes time. I feared that I would need more time to learn and apply what is expected of me. I am not sure, if it was fair to the department or the FTO's to spend that much time on me when the department is short staffed. On the other hand I know that I could have been an asset to the department, if I had the time. During my end of block one meeting with Sgt. Barbour and Officer Makings, I was honest and forth coming in myself evaluation. Sgt. Barbour understood this and extended me two more' weeks with FTO Stansfield on graveyard. The decision was not a blow to my ego,but rather an opportunity for me to improve on certain areas, and I believe I did. It should be noted that Officer Stansfield and Officer Makings are great FTO's. They have done quite a bit in providing me quality training along with constructive criticisms, and for that I am thankful. I have all of my department issued gear ready to be returned. Again thank you the opportunity. Sincerely, Kamal Sharif CIVIL SERVICE/RECRUITMENT DIVISION Natalie Winecka Civil Service Chief Examiner 400 West Gowe KEN T Kent, WA 98032 WASHINGTON Fax: 253-856-6270 OFFICE: 253-856-5282 CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION April 4, 2014 Mr. Christopher Hayter 12023 NE 2041h Place E101 Bothell, WA 98011 Dear Christopher: I am following up on the e-mail that you sent our Recruitment Officer, Wayne Graff, requesting to withdraw from the Kent Police Department testing process.
