The Forum is continuing to build an inclusive, committed, and cohesive alliance among communities in South King County to help create affordable and11 ' appropriate housing opportunities for everyone. The Forum's first public step towards that goal was to offer a Community Housing Conference on October 1, 1994. Some of the Commission members attended this conference. This memo addresses how the Forum is implementing the results of the conference. . The Housing Conference set the foundation for discussing a regional mechanism for addressing South King County Housing issues. Althj.ough housing costs may be a little lower,"incomes are also lower. The average rent in South County,` and Kent is unaffordable to those making less than 50 percent of median income or$22,700 for a three person household. (Note: a person making minimum wage earns $10,632 a year). The affordability of homeownership is even worse. For instance, the GMA-mandated Housing Finance Task Force must create a new regional funding resource. If we had a mechanism that could readily use or direct the use of these funds South King County may be better able to get its fair share of the funds easily and quickly. The Task Force plans to present its proposal for such a resource by next July. This proposal`then must be reviewed by all the cities in King County. Therefore, a regional mechanism may be a mor:71-e effective way to meet Ke%nt's ;and South County's`housing needs than individual cit%y% efforts.
