ORDINANCE NO. 9/1
AN ORDINANCE of the City of Kent, Wash-
ington relating to traffic speeds, increasing
or decreasing speed limits upon certain streets,
providing for regulations of traffic signals,
repealing conflicting City Ordinances, and
providing for penalties for violations.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENT, WASHINGTON, DO
HEREBY ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. STATE SPEED LAWS APPLICABLE. The state
traffic laws regulating the speed of vehicles, chapters 46.61.400
through 46.61.475 of the Motor Vehicle Laws of the State of Wash-
ington, shall be applicable upon all streets within this city,
except as this chapter, as authorized by state law, hereby de-
clares and determines upon the basis of engineering and traffic
investigation that certain speed regulations shall be applicable
upon specified streets or in certain areas, in which event, it
shall be unlawful for any person to drive a vehicle at a speed in
excess of any speed so declared in this chapter when signs are in
place giving notice thereof.
Section'2. INCREASING OR DECREASING SPEED LIMIT IN
CERTAIN ZONES. It is hereby determined on the basis of an en-
gineering and traffic investigation that the speed permitted by
state law upon some of the following streets is less and, in some
cases, more than is necessary for safe operation of vehicles there-
on by reason of the designation and sign posting of said streets
as arterial highways, and by reason of widely spaced intersections,
and by reason of traffic thereon as disclosed by studies, and it
is hereby declared that the speed limit shall be as hereinafter
set forth on those streets or parts of streets herein designated,

at the times specified, when signs are erected giving notice
thereof, but in no case shall the speed limit exceed sixty miles
per hour.

Section 3. The City Traffic Engineer is herewith dir-
ected to obtain from the Washington State Highway Commission, said
Commission's approval and ratification of the terms of this sec-
tion as required by RCW 47.24.020 and to see that proper signs
are posted along the affected portion of said highway, notifying
the public of the reduction of said legal speed limit. (Ord. 1711

1356, 1966; Ord. 1220; Ord. 1107 51; Ord. 1018, 1959; Ord. 848
925 (a), 1952).
Section 4. REGULATION OF SPEED BY TRAFFIC SIGNALS.
The Traffic Engineer is authorized to regulate the timing of
traffic signals so as to permit the movement of traffic in an
orderly and safe manner.
Section 5. VIOLATIONS. Every person convicted of a
violation of this Ordinance shall be punished by a fine of not
more than FIVE HUNDRED (500.00) DOLLARS or by imprisonment for
not more than six (6) months or by both such fine and imprison-
ment.
Section 6. All Ordinances of the City of Kent incon-
sistent with any of the provisions of this Ordinance are hereby
repealed.
Section 7. This Ordinance shall take effect and be in
force five (5) days from and after its passage, approval and
publication, as provided by law.
