A RESOLUTION of the City Council of the
City of Kent, Washington, supporting commuter
rail in a revised system master plan to be
submitted to the voters.
WHEREAS, a Tacoma-Seattle commuter rail proposal was
included in the original Regional Transit System Plan produced in
1993 by the Joint Regional Policy Committee (JRPC) established by
the Washington State Legislature to develop a three-county high
capacity transit plan; and
WHEREAS, in 1994 the Regional Transit Authority,
created by the Washington State Legislature to succeed the JRPC,
also included a Tacoma-Seattle commuter rail program in its
Master Plan for a three-county regional transit system; and
WHEREAS, the City of Kent identified in its
Comprehensive Transportation Plan a commuter rail station in
downtown Kent; and
WHEREAS, the City of Kent has invested significant
amounts of resources, staff time and community input in
contributing to support for commuter rail in the Kent Valley; and
WHEREAS, demonstrations of a prototype commuter rail
car in Kent and of a "Try Rail" commuter rail operation between
Seattle and Tacoma through Kent proved very popular; NOW,
THEREFORE,
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENT, WASHINGTON DOES
HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the Regional Transit Authority include
a Tacoma-Seattle commuter rail operation in a revised System
Master Plan to be submitted to the voters.
Section 2. That the Regional Transit Authority work
with the transit agencies in King, Pierce and Snohomish Counties
to illustrate for the voters and thereby increase understanding
of the potential service connections between suburban bus and
commuter rail operations.
