COMMITTEE MEMBERS PRESENT: Chair Leona Orr, Connie Epperly, Rico Yingling,
Judy Woods, Tom Brotherton, Tim Clark
The meeting was called to order by Chair Leona Orr at 5:00 PM.
Conference Center Study Report
Director of Operations Brent McFall said the City had entered into a contractual agreement with
Hunter Interests, who specializes in Economic Development strategies (particularly as relating to
the emphasis of public assembly) to undertake a Conference Center Study to look specifically at
the strength of the Kent market, conduct analyses, do interviews, and gather data.
Geoff Graham, Hunter Interests, gave a report on the study results, detailing the need for
infrastructure support, entertainment, food, lodging, and other necessary amenities for a
successful Center. He outlined several recommendations and options for development, along
with funding mechanisms. Mr. Graham noted that Kent has a thriving economy and lots of
amenities in the downtown area.
Intergovernmental Report
• Government Affairs Manager Dena Laurent gave a summary of policy actions taken in Olympia.
She mentioned the potential backfill from I-695, funding for the Public Health District,Housing
Issues/Buildable Lands (Kent's meeting density targets), and Welfare Reform(Kent serves 30%
of the welfare recipients in the County). She noted the Pipeline Safety Bill had been adopted by
the legislature.
The meeting adjourned at 6:40 PM.
