The meeting was called to order by Chair Judy Woods at 5:00 PM.
Midway Subarea Plan/Study
Gloria Gould-Wessen introduced Rich Sepler and his class from the Department of
Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington who worked with the
citizens of the Midway area to study future land use decisions and regulations. The
Plan/Study was initiated by the Cities of Kent and Des Moines to focus on opportunities
and identify problems unique to the area and to develop appropriate land use
strategies.
Students Orit Sarfaty and Christie O'Brien gave a Power Point presentation covering
history, socio-demographics, community services, schools, transportation and traffic
conditions, land use, public safety, and economic development and housing. The
students presented recommendations and short and medium term strategies for
working with local businesses and citizens to see future redevelopment action and the
clean-up and revitalization of the area. (Please see agenda packet materials for more
detailed information.)
Council President Judy Woods expressed great excitement for the Plan and its
possibilities for the Midway area. She thanked the students and Professor Sepler for all
their hard work and efforts and encouraged them to be a catalyst for continuing the
process and working to see that their recommendations are brought to fruition.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:57 PM.
