CALL TO ORDER
Committee Chair, Jim Berrios called the meeting to order at 4:31 p.m.
COMMITTEE MEMBERS PRESENT:
Committee Chair, Jim Berrios, Councilmember Les Thomas, and Council President
Dana Ralph. The meeting was called to order at 4:31 p.m.
Changes to the Agenda:
None
Item i - Approval of meetina minutes dated May 13, 2014
Councilmember Thomas MOVED to approve the minutes of May 13, 2014.
The motion was SECONDED by Council President Ralph and PASSED 3-0.
Item 2 Ordinance Amending KCC 9.38 - Parking - Recommend
Chief Ken Thomas presented information regarding proposed changes to the Kent
City Code in an effort to try to address the street racing problem in the north end of
Kent where there is a high volume of street racers. Chief Thomas indicated
enforcement was not solving the problem and that he believes that giving the Chief
of Police the authority to periodically suspend parking enforcement in those areas
will help reduce the racing.
Council President Ralph MOVED to recommend council authorize the
Council adopt an ordinance amending Kent City Code 9.38, authorizing the
Chief of Police to suspend the enforcement of certain parking restrictions
in order to protect the public health, safety, and welfare. The motion was
SECONDED by Councilmember Thomas and PASSED 3-0.
Item 3 Fourth of July & Fireworks Update - Information Only
Division Chief/Fire Marshall, Jon Napier presented information regarding fireworks
within the city. Fireworks stands will open June 28th and close at 11:00 on July 4tn
Fireworks can be discharged within the city of Kent between the hours of 9:00 a.m.
- 11:00 p.m., only on the 4th of July. The public education campaign begins with
public works streets erecting signs and continues with news releases, advertising,
posters, flyers, and websites.
An after-action-report will be presented at the August public safety committee
meeting.
Item 4 - Police Chief's Update
Chief Thomas presented information regarding the police department.
2013 Annual Police Department Report:

Chief Thomas believes the report provides good overview of the police department.
STAFFING UPDATE:
Chief Thomas advised of the number of officers that have been hired in the past
year. He hopes the police department will be up to the budgeted numbers of staff
by September ist. Sara Wood is researching and applying for grants, including the
COPS grant, that will help pay for additional officers.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:32 p.m. by Committee Chair Berrios.
