COUNCIL PLANNING COMMITTEE

SUBJECT: FIVE YEAR UPDATE OF THE COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
At the City Council workshop on January 18, 1 spoke for a few minutes about a proposed
overview and update of the City's comprehensive plan. The comprehensive plan,
prepared under the provisions of the Washington State Growth Management Act, was
adopted by the City Council in April, 1995. While the plan has been effective in
managing growth in Kent since adoption, there are several reasons why a comprehensive
overview of the plan is warranted at this time. The Planning Department has included
this project on our work program for 2000, and work is now proceeding on the update.
At the February 7 committee meeting, I will present some of the rationale and goals of
this project, and also look forward to your comments and questions.
I have attached a preliminary schedule for this project, as well as an outline of the project,
both of which I previously gave the Council at the January 18 workshop. If you have any

NOTE:
Along with this overall update of the comprehensive plan, there will also be
a process to consider site-specific amendments to the plan, as there is every
year. The annual application date for plan amendments is September 1. The
public hearing schedule on these annual plan amendments will need to be
coordinated with the public hearings on the overall plan update, so the
hearings do not overlap.
