MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF MAY 27, 1965
Renton City Hall
The meeting was called to order at 8:10 p.m. by President Bob Wing. A motion from the
membership to dispense with the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting passed.
President Wing announced that the printing of the industrial surveys of the four cities
was complete, and they are now available.
Baldy Sammis reported on his attendance at the Governorts Industrial Tour East stating
that the results should come in due course. It was found the thing of most interest to
them was the tax structure in the state of Washington--that while the B&O and sales taxes
are high, there is no personal or corporate income tax and real estate taxes are compar-
atively low.
Warren Gonnason, Assistant County Engineer, made a brief presentation on the status of
the flood control studies and introduced the program concerning the combination of flood
control, gravity drainage, improvement of the river channel, and navigation. The program
was presented first by Col. Holbrook of the Corps of Engineers, the second part by Eldon
Opheim, Manager, Port of Seattle, and the third part by Warren Gonnason, representing
King County. This was a most interesting presentation of the studies being made of the
Green River Watershed which is part of the comprehensive water resourse study of the en-
tire region to determine the medium and long range needs, sources, and uses of available
water, including, in addition to flood control and navigation, irrigation, recreation,
fisheries, etc. The Corps study should be available by June, 1966.
Following the foregoing presentation, the meeting was resumed, and John Fournier pre-
sented the final mockup of the TRAK folder for review.
Noel Bicknell suggested that the Valley Regional Planning Commission affiliate with the
Planning Association of Washington. There would be dues of $15 per annum. An annual
conference is held by the affiliated organizations for the discussion of mutual problems
and developments. President Wing deferred a decision until the following meeting.
It was agreed that a regular meeting be scheduled for June 24 at the Kent City Hall at
8:00 p.m. In July and August, luncheon meetings will be held on Thursday, July 22, and
Thursday, August 26, to be attended by the executive committee and open to all members
who can attend.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
