HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Committees - Economic Development Corporation - 03/14/1985 CITY OF KENT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION March 14, 1985 A special meeting of the Kent Economic Development Corporation was called to order at 7:30 a.m. by Chairman of the Board, Tim Leahy. Present: BOARD MEMBERS: Councilman Tim Leahy, Chairman Councilman Berne Biteman Leo Powers OFFICERS: City Attorney P. Stephen DiJulio, General Counsel City Clerk Marie Jensen, Secretary CITY OFFICIALS: Dick Cushing, City Administrator BROTHERTON-PLEAS APPLICATION It was noted that the purpose of the meeting was to consider an application from Brotherton-Pleas in the amount of $1 ,200,000. Joe Brotherton explained that he and Riley Pleas owned the Seaport Steel Building located at 22445 76th Avenue South, consisting of 94,000 square feet, plus an additional 5,000 square feet in office space on approximately seven acres. He noted that the Robbins Company had leased their existing facility to the Boeing Company and will now lease the Brotherton-Pleas facility, subject to approximately $1 ,000,000 in improvements to be made by Brotherton-Pleas. Brotherton briefly described the Robbins Company business as manufacturing and assembly of mining and drilling equipment. Upon Power's question, it was determined that the Brotherton-Pleas building was equipped with cranes. Brotherton noted that it was anticipated that the Robbins Company would be moved and in operation by early or mid-summer. Resolution 1985-19, determining to sell bonds to provide funds to finance an industrial development facility for Brotherton-Pleas and its lessee, the Robbins Company, was introduced. Biteman moved to adopt the resolution, Powers seconded, the motion carried. UPDATE ON ALASKAN FREIGHT CONSOLIDATORS APPLICATION DiJulio noted that there had been no further progress on this application because of financing arrangements and that the proposed project may be abandoned. KENT BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY SHOW Cushing noted that this Corporation had expressed interest in becoming a sponsor of the Kent Business and Industry Show to be held at the Kent Commons on May 2, 3 and 4 (See minutes of Special Meeting, January 17, 1985). He noted that the Corporation might further consider allocating some funds for material to be displayed at an EDC booth at the Show. Biteman noted that ivideo cassettes could be made from slides which might be used for the Show.
