HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Committees - Public Safety (Committee) - 03/21/1989 Marie Jensen City Ark z CITY OF KENT Safety Committee Minutes APR 19 IyUj CITY OF KtNT March 21, 1989 CITY CLERK Present: Rose Grabert, Bruce Lipp, Don Fronsdahl, Brad Dupleich, Lori Brown and Joe Sams. POLICE DEPARTMENT INCIDENT: While operating a service truck to remove impounded vehicles from the City Shops, Officer failed to check side mirror and backed into a Police vehicle causing minor damage. Comments: The Committee felt that this accident was preventable and recommended that the Officer be more careful to check the rear view mirrors before backing. POLICE DEPARTMENT INCIDENT: Officer was attempting to apprehend a suspect who was resisting arrest. During the struggle, Officer struck an arm on some unknown object and fell to the ground. Injuries resulting from this incident included a badly scraped knee and a sore arm. COMMENTS: This was felt to be a non-preventable accident due to the nature of work required of the position of Police Officer. PARKS DEPARTMENT INCIDENT: Employee slipped in the parking lot on oil and water. Department responded by spreading Kitty litter over the spot. COMMENTS: The Committee determined that this particular accident was non-preventable, but recommended that employees watch out for oil slicks in City parking lots. PARKS DEPARTMENT INCIDENT: In the process of unloading sani cans from a truck, employee was struck in the head and knocked to the ground. No doctor was required and apparently no significant injury resulted. COMMENTS: Concern was raised by the members of the Committee regarding WISHA requirements for use of hard hats. The Committee also felt that the information identified on the accident reports was not adequate for determining whether or not this accident was preventable. Further information will be obtained prior to the next Safety Committee meeting. PARKS DEPARTMENT INCIDENT: While using a shovel to dig in frozen ground, employee jammed a thumb. Some pain was experienced, but no doctor's assistance was sought. COMMENTS: The committee felt that this was a preventable accident and recommended that the employee use a different tool to dig out roots. PARKS DEPARTMENT INCIDENT: Employee was repairing plumbing in a small. space. Work required the application of heavy pressure on a pipe wrench which resulted in an injury to the employee's rib cage. COMMENTS: Again, the Committee felt that the information provided on the accident reports was not adequate to determine whether or not this accident was preventable. More information will be obtained for the next meeting. SAFETY AWARDS PROGRAM - Baseline figure will be developed for the next meeting, and publicity and a kick-off will be determined. LABOR AND INDUSTRIES AUDIT - There were 22 directives given to the City of Kent as a result of this audit. The Personnel Department and Scott Wetzel Services will be responding to Labor and Industries and developing programs and procedures to comply with State law.
