SAFETY COMMITTEE MINUTES
January 17, 1989
Present: Beth Remington, Barbara Keohane, Brad Dupleich, Casey
Ellis, Don Fronsdahl, Brian Shira, Lori Brown, and Joe
Sams
The following items were discussed:
PUBLIC WORKS
Incident: Employee smashed fingers in the handle of a truck
while trying to force a tailgate shut.
Comments: The Committee considered this a preventable
accident and recommended that maintenance of City
vehicles include a check of door and tailgate
handles. More frequent lubing would prevent this
type of accident.
PARKS MAINTENANCE
Incident: Employee injured back while trying to lift the
Saturday Market building onto a trailer.
Apparently, a number of employees were involved and
were trying to lift the building using two beams as
levers.
Comments: The Committee believed that this accident was also
preventable and recommended that the Parks
Department rent a boom truck or a forklift to move
this building in the future.
Also discussed was the possibility of conducting a fire drill in
City Hall. This will be investigated with the proper
Departments. In addition, there was concern that only those
accidents that warranted discussion were being listed on the
agenda used by the Committee. It was determined that all
accidents will be placed on the agenda in order to obtain a true
picture of the Safety record throughout the City.
The Committee briefly addressed the subject of a disaster plan
for the City, whether or not a plan exists and what would be
required to create one.
The new Safety Awards Program was discussed. It was requested by
those members present that copies of the original proposal be
distributed for discussion at the February meeting.
