HomeMy WebLinkAboutCity Council Committees - Public Safety (Committee) - 06/21/1988 c , " CITY OF KENT .SAFETY COMMITTEE MINUTES June 21 , 1988 Present: Les Wong, Jennifer Carey, Don Fronsdahl , Greg McCormick, Bruce Lipp, Kevin Ellis, Becky Fowler and Peggy Todd The following items were discussed: EMPLOYEE INJURIES Police Department INCIDENT: While employee was traveling from Montana back to Washington after completing a training school , he stopped at a gas station. As he put air in a tire, he squatted down, pivoted and felt his left knee give out. COMMENTS: Due to the circumstances, it appears that this incident could not have been prevented. Parks Department INCIDENT: While employee was assisting in the moving of pool tables to a storage area at the Kent Commons, his finger got caught between the table and floor. COMMENTS: Ideal behavior would be for employees to use proper procedures for moving furniture and equipment. Possibly the use of a board when removing table from doily would prevent future injuries. Parks Department INCIDENT: While employee was raking out the Tong jump pit, he pulled a muscle in his back. COMMENTS: Committee agrees with the department's recommendation for employees to maybe stretch out prior to doing this type of work. Parks Department INCIDENT: While tapping an 8" water main at the Shop, the employee's hand • slipped off the handle while pulling tapping unit back and hitting employee in the forehead. COMMENTS: Committee agrees with the department's comments for the employees to use proper procedures while tapping water mains. Public Works INCIDENT: While employee was trying to attach the washdown hose on Unit 402, he jammed a cotter pin under his fingernail of his right hand ring finger. COMMENTS: The committee agrees with the department in that, +Ae cotter pin be replaced with a proper cold-rolled pin for safe$y, purposes. The committee agrees with the department in that they checked out the hose reel and replaced the cotter pin with a move appropriate cold-rolled pin for safety. Public Works INCIDENT: Employee pulled a muscle in left side while in the process of picking up cones and climbing in and out of a City truck. COMMENTS: Ideal behavior would be for employees to be more careful when climbing in and out of vehicles. Possibly by alternating a second person while doing this job would help relieve fatigue of muscles. AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS Police Department INCIDENT: A drunk citizen was taken into protective custody to be taken to s detox. While in transport he kicked the left rear door damaging the top of it. , COMMENTS: Due to circumstances, it appears that this incident could not have been prevented. Police Department " INCIDENT: Police vehicle #368 was struck by a citizen's vehicle as the citizen's vehicle was changing lanes from the inside to the outside lane. COMMENTS: Due to"circumstances, it appears that this incident could not have been prevented. Public Works INCIDENT: Employee was pulling off shoulder of roadway and pulled off too close to a cement post next to a fire hydrant and iscraped the right door and fender of vehicle. COMMENTS: Ideal behavior would be for employee to use more care and proper procedures when pulling off or backing up on roadway near obstructions. OTHER BUSINESS The Safety Committee agreed to hold a special meeting to discuss the Safety Awards Program to be scheduled for June 28, 1988 at 2:30 p.m. 0483W-18W - 2 -
