Lori Hogan OTHERS PRESENT: Dee Moschel, Chamber of Commerce Ron Ricketts, Chamber of Commerce APPROVAL OF VOUCHERS All claims for the period ending October 31 , 1987, in the amount of $969,273.67 were approved for payment. EMPLOYEE WELLNESS PROGRAM Committee Chair Tom Bailey introduced the subject by saying the staff had been directed to investigate, at the last Operations Committee meeting, other options for an Employee Wellness Program. Mike Webby introduced the discussion of the program by highlighting, particularly for Chamber of Commerce visitor Ron Ricketts, the highlights of an Employee Wellness Program that includes an evaluation of City and employee needs, employee confidential medical evaluation, wellness games as incentives for participation, the use of the Kent Commons, for a one year trial with employees sharing ,half the cost. Following the presentation, Mike noted that the Committee had asked the staff to investigate other program providers. Mike called six companies that might provide employee wellness programs that could be marketed to other users and found three companies willing to provide such a program. Those companies were: Pacific Physical Therapy, Pacific Nautilus, and the Virginia Mason Clinic. Pacific Physical Therapy and Pacific Nautilus either could not encompass the number of employees that the City would look to, have participate, or their programs were in excess of $35,000 ($93i000 for Pacific Nautilus). 4i alit Operations Committee Minutes 5 November 2, 1987 Page 2 The Virginia Mason Clinic provided a program very similar to ,tho, one that was being offered by Croup Health. They could serve 200 employeees :for, approximately $15,000. Their program though provided now,of .toe incentive-type programs that the Group Health program could 'pro-Ode. Following this presentation, the staff recommended the option of using Group Health to set the program up and provide the employee evaluation using the Kent Commons facility as the base for the fitness portion of the program. Following this presentation, Councilmember Berne Biteman noted that he had contacted an individual in Gig Harbor who had developed a program for the Peninsula School District teachers, that now has as participants employees of both the telephone and light companies in the area. He asked the staff to contact this individual about their program. Councilmembers Biteman and Houser also felt that the Commons provided a cold environment and therefore, the incentive for continued employee participation may not be there. Following this discussion, it was decided to have the Committee recommend the pulling of the consent item on the November 3 Council Agenda aad for an investigation of the program currently underway in the Peninsula School District. The information will be brought back to the Committee at their November 16 meeting, hopefully to finalize a decision on the program so that it can be begun in January following development with City staff participation. 66F-01F
